Boston College Postgame Notes: Louisville

Colton Lichtenberg connected on a game-winning field goal with no time left as Boston College defeated Louisville 45-42 Saturday afternoon at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium in Louisville.

The Eagles finished with a season-high 555 yards of total offense. It was the most yards by a BC team since totaling 549 yards against Maine in 2014.

BC scored 45 points, its most in an ACC game since scoring 28 in a win over Syracuse (Nov. 29, 2014, 28-7).

The 45 points scored were a season-high for Boston College. It also marked the most points scored in an ACC road game during the Steve Addazio era and the most points scored under Addazio against a Power Five opponent.

It was the most points in a road ACC game since Nov. 1, 2014 when the Eagles posted 33 points in a 33-31 win at Virginia Tech.

Boston College rushed for a season-high 364 yards on the ground. The previous single-game best was 224 in the win over Central Michigan on Sept. 30.

Louisville scored a touchdown on its opening possession. It marked the first time this season Boston College has allowed points on an opening drive by the opposition.

Louisville leads the all-time series, 6-4. Today was the first win in four tries for BC in ACC play against Louisville. It was BC’s first win against the Cardinals since a 35-14 victory in 1994 at Louisville.

Offense

True freshman running back AJ Dillon scored a career-high four touchdowns to lead the Boston College offense. Dillon finished the day with a career-high 272 yards on 39 carries, his first career 200-yard game.

The four rushing touchdowns tied for the third-best performance in BC single-game history. Andre Williams (2013 vs. Army) and Montel Harris (2009 vs. NC State) hold the school record with five rushing touchdowns in a game.

It was the first 200-yard rushing game for a Boston College player since Andre Williams rushed for 295 yards at New Mexico State (Nov. 9, 2013).

Redshirt freshman quarterback Anthony Brown threw a career-long 42-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Thadd Smith for BC’s first touchdown of the game.

The 42-yard touchdown pass was the longest scoring play of the season for the Eagles.

Thadd Smith scored his first receiving touchdown on a 42-yard pass from Anthony Brown in the first quarter. It was Smith’s third career receiving touchdown and his first since a three-yard touchdown reception against NC State on Nov. 7, 2015.

Brown had a career-long 30-yard run in the second quarter as he spun out of a sack on third and 10. At halftime, Brown had 52 yards rushing, a career-high.

Darius Wade entered the game at the 10:22 mark of the third quarter, replacing an injured Anthony Brown (right shoulder). He completed his first seven passes and finished the game 7-of-10 for 91 yards. Brown was 5-of-17 for 100 yards, a TD, and an interception before leaving the game.

Tommy Sweeney led BC with four receptions, good for 57 yards. Chris Garrison (36 yards) and Jon Hilliman (18) each hauled in two passes.

Entering today’s game, BC had scored a total of 44 second-half points. Today, the Eagles scored 31 points through the third (14) and fourth (17) quarters.

Defense

Senior defensive back Kamrin Moore made a key defensive play late in the game, recovering a fumble by Louisville’s Jay Smith at the 50-yard line and returning it 11 yards. That turnover helped set up the final game-winning drive.

Sophomore cornerback Hamp Cheevers, in for his first snap at cornerback, made the key forced fumble that led to Moore’s recovery.

Junior cornerback Taj-Amir Torres earned his second career start (32nd career game) as the Eagles started the game in a nickel defense. It was the first start of the season for Torres.

Ty Schwab led the Eagles with 11 tackles – including six solo stops.

Torres (four solo), Lukas Denis (five solo), and John Lamot (six solo) each registered six tackles on the afternoon. Denis also tallied two pass breakups, while Lamot notched a tackle-for-loss.
