There are times when you lose that you can accept, and there are those you can’t. Last night, at LeLacheur Park, the Lowell Spinners lost a game that was available to win. Shoddy pitching and the inability to hold a five run lead led to an 11-10 loss to Hudson Valley. It stopped the Spinners from winning their third straight series.

Both starting pitchers struggled in this one. Austin Franklin for the Renegades and Yorvan Pantoja of the Spinners labored through their outings. Lowell broke out on top in the first when leadoff hitter Michael Osinski drilled the first pitch he saw for a HR over the wall in left. The long ball was his first of the season and the first by the team since July 16th at Williamsport. 1-0 Spinners.

They would expand the lead to 5-0 by scoring four times in the second. The uprising was helped out by two Hudson Valley errors. RBI hits from Samuel Miranda and Osinski, three RBI on the night, gave Lowell a lead you thought they could handle.

Friday night would not be one of those times. Over the next inning and two-thirds Pantoja would give up nine hits and seven runs, to turn a 5-0 lead into a 7-5 deficit. Two of those runs came on a HR by Deion Tansel to left his second of the year. Hudson Valley made the adjustment and Pantoja did not.

The Spinners got to within a run in the 5th on a RBI single by Marino Campana that scored Garrett Benge. However, the inning could have been bigger if not for a base running mistake by Yomar Valentin after he walked to start the frame. He misread a deep fly ball to center by Benge and was forced at second.

Hudson Valley pushed across three more in the seventh vs Mitchell Osnowitz as four hits led to the runs. The big blow was a two-run double off the bat of Rafelin Lorenzo that gave the Renegades a 10-6 lead through six and a half innings of play.

Lowell made one more push to take the game scoring four times in the bottom of the seventh. They did it with the benefit of only one hit. All the runs were charged to Hudson Valley second hurler of the night Blake Pfughaupt (1.2 IP, 3H, 4R, 2 BB, 2K’s). When the inning was through the game was tied at 10-10.

In the eight the Renegades retook the lead for good against Ryan Oduber the third Lowell pitcher of the night. LF Oscar Rojas doubled to left, after a strikeout of Vidal Brujan, three hits on the night. Carl Chester stepped to the plate and drove one to deep center field on which Yoan Aybar would go back and make the catch on. However, with his momentum taking him to the wall Rojas took off from second and never stopped until he crossed the plate with the go ahead run. 11-10 Hudson Valley.

The Renegades called on their closer Zack Mozingo to close the door and he did just that. He retired the Spinners in order to pick up his fourth save of the year. Sam Long was your winner and is 1-0 on the season, Oduber takes the loss and he is now 1-1.

The Spinners travel to Brooklyn for a three games series that begins on Saturday night.
