Today marks the first installment of what will be a summer-long look at the short-season NY-Penn League.  We at NGSC Sports are happy to be providing this into the month of September.

The three divisional leaders at this time are the Staten Island Yankees (5-1) in the McNamara, the West Virginia Black Birds (5-2) in the Pinckney, and the Connecticut Tigers (5-2) in the Stedler. The early leader in the wild card race is the Hudson Valley Renegades (4-2).

Some league leaders to mention include Oliver Ortiz of the Auburn Doubledays, who leads the league in home runs with four, and in RBI with 11. He also leads in total bases with 23. He is second in slugging percentage at .793 and in extra-base hits with five. Oliver possesses the best HR/AB Ratio so far at 1/7.25.

Joshua Lopez of State College is the leader in batting average at .579, his 11 hits tied him for the lead in that category with three other players. Lopez is leading in on-base percentage at .579. He is second in total bases at 18.

On the pitching side of things, one name stands out through the first couple of weeks of the season. Daniel Castano of State College, tied in wins with two, leads in innings pitches at 14.0, and in strikeouts with 15.  He’s at the top in at-bats against with 51 and in total batters faced 53.

One hurler off to a bit of a tough start is Sam Tewes of State College. He is the leader in hits allowed at 17, runs allowed at 13 and in earned runs allowed at nine.

Yorvan Pantoja is another pitcher not doing well at this time. He is tied in sacrifice flies allowed at two with three others. He is also tied in wild pitched at four, and is third in walks given up with seven.

Attendance is off to a good start in the Penn League, with six teams over 10,000 in home attendance so far. The leader at the moment is the Brooklyn Cyclones who after three home games are averaging 7,310 at the gate.
