A long night at the ballpark turned out ok for both the Lowell Spinners and the Vermont Lake Monsters, as they each took a game in last night’s DH. Vermont took game one 6-5 and the Spinners came back and took game two 4-2.
Game one was the completion of the opening night game that was called because of rain on Tuesday night. It was picked up in the top of the third inning. Vermont struck for two in that frame with RBI singles from Mike Martin and Jesus Lopez giving them the lead. The runs were scored off Spinners hurler Denyi Reyes.
Vermont would add three more in the seventh off relief pitcher Harrison Cooney, the big blow was a bases-clearing triple off the bat off Javier Godard that gave the Lake Monsters a 6-0 advantage.
The Spinners mounted a comeback in the late innings as they would score three times themselves in the bottom of the seventh against Jose Mora, after being blanked by Richard Morban.
A RBI single from Yoan Aybar played the first run of the season for Lowell and it was followed by a sac fly from Raiwinson Lameda. A single to center field off the bat of Samuel Miranda cut the lead in half at 6-3 after seven innings.
Lowell was not done as they scored twice in the eighth to get within one at 6-5. A run-scoring ground out by DH Juan Barriento scored one run. A RBI base hit to right field by Yoan Aybar, who had three hits in game one, made things interesting heading into the ninth.
However, Vermont had the answer in Oscar Tovar who came out of the bullpen and nailed down win number one for Vermont. Het got the save with 1.1 innings of shutout ball. Morgan got the win and Groome took the loss.
Game two saw the home team jump out on top in the first inning. A booming two run hr off the bat of Barriento that hit off the scoreboard in left gave the Spinners a 2-0 lead. The home run was hit off of starter Henderson Hurtado.
The Lake Monsters tied the game in the third thanks to some wildness from Lowell starter Yorvan Pantoja. Two wild pitches along with a sac fly by leadoff man Jeremiah McCray had the game even at 2-2 after three.
This time it would be the spinners that would produce the late inning magic to get win number one in 2017. After a walk and a hit batsman, the Spinners were in business with no one out. Victor Acosta hit into a fielder’s choice that put runners at the corners with one down. Up stepped Aybar to face Abdiel Mendoza who was pitching well to this point. Aybar drilled a Mendoza offering into the gap in right-center scoring the go-ahead runs to put Lowell in front 4-2. Spinners pitcher Devon Fisher, who went the final 2.1 giving up only one hit, gets his first win of the year. Spinners win game two 4-2.
The team hits the road for the first time this year with a brief trip to Tri-City before returning home this weekend.
