For the first time in the America East tournament, the bats came alive. Unfortunately, Maryland-Baltimore County was the only team that could make that claim. Backed by a 13-hit attack that featured a four-RBI day for third baseman Christian Torres and three hits from Catcher Hunter Dolshun. The Retrievers moved on with a 9-0 win over Albany Great Danes.
The offense came in two innings for UMBC. A four-spot in the bottom of the first vs Great Danes starter J.T. Genovese ended his day before it got going. After getting the first two men to start the game, Genovese ran into big time trouble as the next four hitters reached base with key hits coming from Hunter Dolshun, a RBI single to right field for RBI #35 on the year. The next batter was Torres who crushed a pitch over the wall in right for a three-run HR, his second of the year and the RBI gave him 27 for the season. Just like that, it was 4-0 Retrievers.
Their second big frame came in the third, a five-run five-hit outburst against the Great Danes bullpen. Ten men came to bat in the inning and UMBC made the most of their chances to put the game away early. After three it was 9-0 Maryland-Baltimore County.
We did not leave out the pitching which for the home team was outstanding. Matt Chanin went the route giving up six hits, walking two and striking out eight. In the middle of the game, Chanin retired 14 out of 15 Albany hitters faced. He attacked the strike zone with the big lead and let his defense take care of the rest. It added up to his fourth win of the year against five losses and complete game number three on the season.
