What a first week of league play in the ACC. You had both Duke and North Carolina getting beat on the road and Florida State winning at the buzzer over Virginia on their home court thanks to Dwayne Bacon. If this is the way the league is going to be week in and week out, it will be an awesome two months of hoops.
Once again the league is showing it’s depth in the polls, with six teams ranked with three in the top ten and 13 in the top 60 of the KenPon ranking. The ACC top to bottom is loaded.
Georgia Tech began its conference season the hard way playing Duke, Louisville, and North Carolina all in the top 10 in the polls. Clemson started league play on a bit of a hot streak, thanks to an eight-game win streak. It’s their longest since the 2010-2011 campaign.
The Virginia Cavilers have been known for their defense during the Tony Bennett era. This season is no different, as they have limited 10 of it first 12 opponents to under 50 points. They lead the nation in scoring defense at 47.7 a game.
Player of the week went to Louisville Quentin Snider and he was also named the USBWA player of the week. Freshman of the week honors went to Boston College’s Ty Bowman.
Two players on a bit of a roll over their last two games get a mention in this week notes. First, Miami Ja’quan Newton averaging 10 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists over that span and Wake’s Keyshawn Woods who is scoring at 15 a game to go along with 5.5 boards and 5 assists.
Finally, it has been a bit of a tough year for the Syracuse Orangemen so far. One player who has risen up is Senior Tyler Lyndon who over his last three ballgames has registered a double-double including one in their season-opening loss to Boston College.
