The Philadelphia Eagles have been hit with a devastating setback ahead of Week 6. Pro Bowl quarterback Jalen Hurts has been diagnosed with a medical condition involving a blood clot and is out indefinitely. The one thing they could not afford to happen.
In a surprising roster move, head coach Nick Sirianni and the Eagles front office have chosen not to place Hurts on Injured Reserve (IR) immediately, keeping open the possibility of a return later this season without subjecting him to the mandatory four-game minimum absence. However, with the Eagles off to an uncomfortable 2-3 start, losing their franchise signal-caller severely threatens to unravel an already struggling campaign.
The Quarterback Shift: Tanner McKee Steps Into the Spotlight
Who is Tanner McKee?
With Hurts sidelined, third-year quarterback Tanner McKee moves into the starter’s role as QB1. The former Stanford product has earned praise inside the building for his arm talent and steady pocket presence during preseason showcases, but stepping up in a regular-season environment represents a massive leap in stakes.
McKee lacks the game-breaking dual-threat capabilities that Hurts brought to Philadelphia’s offense. Sirianni and the coaching staff will have to completely revamp their game plan, stripping away quarterback-run concepts—including their famous short-yardage “Tush Push”—in favor of a quick-release, rhythm-based passing scheme.
Behind McKee on the active depth chart, the Eagles will rely on backup reserve Cole Payton to serve as the primary backup quarterback. Should McKee struggle or suffer an injury of his own, Philadelphia’s depth under center will be tested to its absolute limit.
Mounting Injury Woes: A Hospital Ward Offense
Skill Position Setbacks & Offensive Line Gaps
Hurts’ medical scare comes on top of an already alarming injury list across the roster. The offense has been decimated by injuries to marquee playmakers:
- Running Back Depth Tested: Franchise star Saquon Barkley has been nursing a hamstring injury, while rookie backup Will Shipley is dealing with a foot injury. If Barkley is limited or forced to miss time, the backfield workload will fall heavily on Dameon Pierce and Carson Steele.
- Wide Receiver Corps Battered: Complementary weapon DeVonta Smith (hamstring) and wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks (hamstring) have both missed practice time leading into Week 6. That leaves wideouts Hollywood Brown, Elijah Moore, and rookie Makai Lemon forced into elevated target roles.
- Trench Battles: Along the offensive line, dominant guard Landon Dickerson has been managing a knee/quad injury, while guard Tyler Steen has dealt with a shoulder issue. That places extra pressure on starting left tackle Jordan Mailata and young center Drew Kendall to keep McKee clean in the pocket.
- Defensive Losses: On the defensive side of the ball, outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard (pectoral/ankle) and linebacker Jalyx Hunt (knee) remain banged up, leaving Vic Fangio’s unit short-handed on the edge.

Week 6 Outlook & Team Analysis: Can Sirianni Weather the Storm?
Adapting the Game Plan
The immediate priority for Nick Sirianni is adjusting to McKee’s skill set. McKee is a traditional pocket passer who excels when throwing on rhythm and reading secondary coverages from the pocket. Expect Philadelphia to lean more on intermediate play-action passes, quick slants, and screen passes to simplify the offense for their new starter.
The Stakes for Philadelphia
At 2-3 in the NFC East, the margin for error in Philadelphia has evaporated. The Eagles cannot afford a multi-game tailspin while waiting for clarity on Hurts’ health. If McKee can manage games, protect the football, and distribute passes efficiently to playmakers like Dallas Goedert and Hollywood Brown, Philadelphia can stay afloat in the playoff race. But if the offense stalls without Hurts, the 2026 season could quickly slide away.
