The 2026–27 NBA regular season tipped off on Tuesday, October 20, with a dramatic three-game slate broadcast nationally on NBC and Peacock. Opening night produced immediate shifts in early-season storylines: the Detroit Pistons engineered a massive 22-point second-half comeback at home, the Oklahoma City Thunder flexed their elite perimeter depth on the road in San Antonio, and a reloaded Philadelphia 76ers squad spoiled a historic championship ring ceremony at Madison Square Garden.
So let’s strap in tight as this looks like it is going to be one of themore intersting seasons in recent memory.
Detroit Pistons 121, Boston Celtics 113: Motor City’s 22-Point Comeback
At Little Caesars Arena, JB Bickerstaff’s Detroit Pistons overcame a 22-point deficit to defeat the Boston Celtics 121-113. Boston appeared in full control during the second quarter, building a 58-45 halftime lead behind a vintage scoring clinic from Paul George, who finished with a game-high 38 points, seven 3-pointers, and five steals.
However, Detroit flipped the script in the second half, outscoring Boston 76-55 across the final two quarters (37 points in the 3rd, 39 in the 4th). Point guard Cade Cunningham directed the comeback, posting 22 points, eight assists, four rebounds, and a block. Center Jalen Duren matched Cunningham with 22 points and nine rebounds, converting 8-of-13 shots from the floor.
Off the bench, Javonte Green delivered a game-altering performance, firing in 19 points on 5-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc to finish with a team-best +21 plus-minus rating. Sharpshooter Duncan Robinson added 21 points on five 3-pointers, while Ausar Thompson turned in a double-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, and a steal.
Despite George’s 38-point night and Derrick White’s 17 points and eight assists, Boston struggled with efficiency from Jayson Tatum, who scored 13 points on 6-of-23 shooting (0-for-7 from three-point range) while dishing out 11 assists.

- Pistons Perimeter Firepower: The addition of Duncan Robinson and bench productivity from Javonte Green gave Detroit the spacing required to unleash Cunningham and Duren in high pick-and-roll scenarios.
- Celtics Rotation Adjustments: With Jayson Tatum struggling with his jump shot (0-for-7 3PT), head coach Joe Mazzulla leaned heavily on Paul George and Derrick White. Neemias Queta and Payton Pritchard logged extensive rotational minutes off the bench.

- Thunder Second-Unit Production: Jared McCain and Alex Caruso (+16) gave Mark Daigneault an elite bench unit that turned defense into immediate transition scoring.
- Spurs Frontcourt Rotations: Victor Wembanyama was flanked by Dylan Harper and De’Aaron Fox, but frontcourt foul trouble forced additional minutes for Luke Kornet and Keldon Johnson.
Philadelphia 76ers & New York Knicks
- Philadelphia’s New Core: Nick Nurse deployed a starting lineup featuring Tyrese Maxey, V.J. Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, LeBron James, and Joel Embiid, using Anfernee Simons as a microwave scorer off the bench.
- Knicks Frontcourt Depth: Andre Drummond played 24 minutes alongside Karl-Anthony Towns, giving New York a heavy physical footprint inside, though defensive rotations suffered against Philadelphia’s perimeter shooters.

- Detroit’s Ascension: The Pistons demonstrated that their young core, combined with elite veteran floor-spacers like Duncan Robinson, can contend with the top tier of the Eastern Conference.
- Oklahoma City’s Championship Pedigree: The Thunder’s multi-positional defense and bench depth make them early favorites to dominate the Western Conference standings.
- Philadelphia’s New Era: Integrating LeBron James and Jaylen Brown alongside Maxey and Embiid gives the 76ers the high-end talent necessary to challenge New York and Boston for Atlantic Division dominance.
