A hard disk is a secondary storage device used by an operating system to store programs, files, and other data permanently. The hard disk structure in OS is organized into different physical and logical parts to make data storage and retrieval easier.
Main Components of Hard Disk Structure
The main components of hard disk structure in OS are given below
1. Platter
A platter is a circular disk inside the hard drive where data is stored. A hard disk may contain multiple platters.
Each platter has a magnetic surface used to store binary data.
2. Track
A track is a circular path on the surface of a platter.
Tracks are divided into smaller units called sectors.
3. Sector
A sector is a small portion of a track used to store data.
Traditionally, a sector commonly stores 512 bytes, although modern drives may use 4 KB sectors.
4. Read/Write Head
The read/write head is used to read data from and write data to the platter.
Each platter surface generally has a corresponding head.
5. Cylinder
A cylinder is a collection of tracks located at the same position on all platter surfaces.
For example, if several platters have track number 10 at the same radial position, all those tracks together form one cylinder.
6. Spindle
The spindle is the central shaft that rotates the platters.
The rotation allows the read/write heads to access different parts of the disk.
Track, Sector, and Cylinder
The relationship can be understood as:
Platter → Track → Sector → Data
While:
Same-position tracks on multiple surfaces → Cylinder
Hard Disk Structure in OS
The operating system does not normally work directly with individual magnetic locations. Instead, it uses logical blocks to organize and access stored data.
The OS and disk controller work together to locate the required data on the storage device.
Key Terms
| Term | Meaning |
| Platter | Circular surface where data is stored |
| Track | Circular path on a platter |
| Sector | Small division of a track |
| Head | Reads and writes data |
| Cylinder | Set of tracks at the same position on different surfaces |
| Spindle | Rotates the platters |
In Short
The basic physical structure of a traditional hard disk consists of platters, tracks, sectors, read/write heads, cylinders, and a spindle. The operating system uses these storage structures, together with logical blocks and disk management techniques, to store and access files efficiently.
