SAN FRANCISCO — History has a new home, and it rests firmly inside a raucous, confetti-drenched Chase Center. In just their second season of existence, the Golden State Valkyries are the 2026 WNBA Champions, capturing the title with an unforgettable 68-63 triumph over the Atlanta Dream in a winner-take-all Game 7.
The victory solidifies Golden State as the fastest North American professional expansion team since 1967 to win a championship. At the absolute center of this historic feat was Finals MVP Gabby Williams, who orchestrated an all-time legendary performance to carry her team to the mountaintop.
Williams Shatters Records in the Second Half
Through the first six games of this grueling series, a definitive trend emerged: the team leading at halftime won every single matchup. When the buzzer sounded at intermission on Saturday night, the Atlanta Dream held a 30-24 advantage, heavily signaling that the crown was headed to the East Coast. Furthermore, Atlanta had boasted an unblemished 16-0 record this season whenever star forward Angel Reese knocked down at least one three-pointer—a feat she achieved in the first half.
But Gabby Williams completely rewrote the script. After being held to just two points in the opening half, Williams exploded for a WNBA Finals record 28 points in the second half. She accounted for a staggering 81% of Golden State’s offensive production in the third quarter alone, scoring 11 consecutive points to pull the Valkyries ahead 45-44 going into the final frame. Williams finished the night with a game-high 30 points, adding four blocks and two steals.
The Game-Breaking Moment
With 2:41 remaining in the fourth quarter, Atlanta’s Rhyne Howard sliced through the defense for a clutch layup, tying the game at 57-57 and dialing the pressure up to maximum inside “Ballhalla”.
Then came the definitive moment of the 2026 WNBA season.
Cool, collected, and completely unfazed, Williams pulled up from a breathtaking 31 feet out. She buried a monster, ice-cold three-pointer from “the parking lot” to break the tie, sending the home crowd into an absolute frenzy. Atlanta’s Allisha Gray and Jordin Canada fought valiantly until the closing seconds, but they simply could not extinguish the fire Williams started. A pair of clutch defensive stops and late-game free throws from Veronica Burton effectively iced the game, cementing a 68-63 reality.

Defensive Masterclass and Legendary Milestones
While Williams dominated the scoreboard, center Kiah Stokes anchored a spectacular defensive masterclass. Stokes hauled down 13 rebounds and logged two blocks, breaking the WNBA record for the most blocks in a single Finals series with an astronomical 19 total deflections. Head Coach Natalie Nakase‘s tactical adjustments—including starting Kaila Charles and veteran Tiffany Hayes (11 points)—completely neutralized Atlanta’s interior offense down the stretch.
The defeat marks another heartbreaking chapter for the Dream, who leave the Finals empty-handed for the fourth time in franchise history. Not everything was lost to sorrow for Atlanta, however; veteran legend DeWanna Bonner etched her name into eternity, becoming the first player in WNBA history to amass 600 career postseason defensive rebounds.
Ultimately, the night belonged to the Bay Area. The Golden State Valkyries, born as an expansion project just two years ago, stand alone at the pinnacle of basketball—champions of the world.
