CLEVELAND — The Chicago White Sox’s magical turnaround season shows no signs of slowing down.
After sweeping the Houston Astros in the Wild Card Series, the White Sox marched into Progressive Field and delivered another stunning blow to the AL Central champions. On Monday afternoon, Chicago edged the Cleveland Guardians 4-3 in Game 2 of the American League Division Series, taking a commanding 2-0 series lead and pushing Cleveland to the absolute brink of elimination.
For a White Sox franchise that hasn’t seen the postseason since 2021, manager Will Venable has orchestrated one of the most incredible single-season turnarounds in recent baseball history. Now, they are just one win away from the American League Championship Series.
Here is how Chicago went on the road and completely dismantled the Guardians’ home-field advantage.
The Cleveland Offensive Collapse
The biggest storyline of this series is the shocking disappearance of the Cleveland Guardians’ offense.
Playing at home in front of a raucous crowd at Progressive Field, the AL Central champions were expected to lean on their deep lineup. Instead, they have been completely suffocated by Chicago’s pitching staff. Across the first two games of the ALDS, Cleveland has mustered a grand total of just seven hits.
After being shut out 3-0 on three hits in Game 1, the Guardians offense showed brief flashes of life in Game 2 but ultimately fell short. Chase DeLauter provided a spark with two hits and a run scored, while Steven Kwan and Jo Adell each added a hit. However, the middle of the order has been completely neutralized. Star third baseman José Ramírez went 0-for-3, and first baseman Nathaniel Lowe went 0-for-4, leaving Cleveland unable to string together the consecutive hits necessary for a big inning.
Burke Shines, Bullpen Holds On
While the Guardians struggled at the plate, the White Sox pitching staff continued its postseason dominance.
In Game 2, Chicago leaned heavily on Sean Burke to handle the bulk of the innings, and he delivered a masterful performance. Burke tossed 5.1 innings of brilliant relief, allowing just one hit and one earned run while striking out six Cleveland batters. He pounded the strike zone, issuing just one walk on 83 pitches to keep the Guardians completely off balance.
When Burke eventually exited, veteran reliever Sean Newcomb stepped up to bridge the gap, firing two scoreless innings and striking out three.
Capitalizing on Opportunities
Offensively, the White Sox did exactly what they needed to do against Cleveland starter Gavin Williams.
Williams actually pitched a tremendous game for the Guardians, racking up 11 strikeouts over five innings of work while allowing just four hits. However, Chicago made the most of their limited opportunities.
Braden Montgomery delivered the heaviest blow, driving in two crucial runs on his lone hit of the afternoon. Chase Meidroth was a constant pest in the batter’s box, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Munetaka Murakami—the hero of Game 1—added another RBI to his postseason tally. Despite striking out 13 times as a team, Chicago’s clutch, situational hitting proved to be the difference in the one-run victory.
What’s Next?
The series now shifts back to the South Side of Chicago for Game 3 on Wednesday.
The Guardians find themselves in a desperate, do-or-die scenario. To keep their season alive, Cleveland must immediately figure out a way to wake up their dormant offense in a hostile road environment.
Meanwhile, the White Sox have all the momentum in the world. With Guaranteed Rate Field sure to be rocking, Chicago will look to complete the sweep and punch their ticket to the ALCS.
