CLEVELAND — The narrative surrounding the Cleveland Browns is officially shifting.
Entering the 2026 season, the deafening storyline was about when—not if—the Browns would finally bench quarterback Deshaun Watson. Instead, Watson has effectively quieted his harshest critics, navigating the Browns to an impressive 3-1 start and sole possession of first place in the AFC North following a gritty 27-24 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday Night Football.
The thrilling victory, sealed by a massive 56-yard game-winning field goal by kicker Andre Szmyt, served as a massive statement for a Cleveland team that is suddenly finding its rhythm and proving it belongs among the AFC elite.
A Tale of Two Quarters
Things did not look promising for Cleveland in the early going. The Steelers, led by veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, marched down the field and took a quick 7-0 lead, momentarily sucking the energy out of Huntington Bank Field.
But the Browns responded with an absolute offensive eruption in the second quarter. Orchestrated brilliantly by Watson, Cleveland’s offense shifted into high gear, posting three touchdowns in the frame to score 21 unanswered points. It was the first time since Week 13 of the 2020 season against Tennessee that the Browns had scored at least 21 points in a single second quarter.
Watson looked incredibly sharp, passing for 181 yards in the first half alone—his highest first-half total since being traded to Cleveland. He finished the night completing 24 of his 33 pass attempts (72.7%) for 268 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
Most importantly, he operated the offense with a level of confidence and command that had been sorely missing over the past few years. The massive, fully guaranteed contract has hung over his head like a dark cloud, but on Thursday night, Watson looked every bit like the franchise quarterback the Browns paid him to be.
The Defense Gets to Rodgers
While the Browns’ offense built the lead, their relentless defense ultimately preserved it.
Going up against Rodgers—who still proved lethal by throwing for 299 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions—the Browns defense dialed up immense pressure. Cleveland battered the veteran signal-caller, racking up five sacks and a staggering 10 quarterback hits.
“They established that right from the beginning,” Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy said of the Browns’ pressure following the game. “I think it was an aggressive game plan by them. I kind of expected some of it, and we were one play short.”
Despite the heavy pressure, Rodgers and the Steelers clawed their way back into the contest. Pittsburgh leaned on a phenomenal performance from receiver DK Metcalf, who hauled in five catches for 115 yards, and running back Jaylen Warren, who gashed the defense for 93 rushing yards on 17 carries. The Steelers eventually tied the game 24-24 with under two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Szmyt Plays Hero, Delpit Slams the Door
With the game tied and the clock ticking down, Watson methodically guided the Browns down the field, setting up his kicker for a high-pressure opportunity.
Andre Szmyt trotted out and drilled a spectacular 56-yard game-winning field goal to give Cleveland the 27-24 lead. The kick perfectly capped off an immaculate night for Szmyt, who was 2-for-2 on field goals and 3-for-3 on extra points.
With seconds remaining, Pittsburgh attempted a desperate final drive, but Browns safety Grant Delpit completely slammed the door. Delpit intercepted Rodgers to put the finishing touches on Cleveland’s third consecutive victory.

What’s Next for Cleveland?
The narrative of “benching Deshaun Watson” is completely dead.
At 3-1, the Browns are playing complementary, winning football. They have an offense that is finally clicking, a suffocating pass rush, and a quarterback who is visibly growing more comfortable in the system with every snap. The massive victory over a bitter division rival gives Cleveland massive momentum as they look to build a comfortable lead in the AFC North hierarchy.
