The Jacksonville Jaguars delivered a statement performance Sunday afternoon. Jacksonville dominated the New England Patriots 35-6 at EverBank Stadium. The Jaguars improved to 2-1 with the victory. Meanwhile, the defending AFC champion Patriots dropped to 1-2. Trevor Lawrence led Jacksonville’s offense throughout the afternoon. He completed 19 of 29 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns. Lawrence also avoided a turnover against a Patriots defense that forced one interception. His efficient performance helped Jacksonville control the game.
Jaguars Strike First
Jacksonville wasted little time establishing control. The Jaguars forced a Drake Maye fumble during the opening quarter. DaVon Hamilton recovered the fumble at Jacksonville’s 38-yard line. The turnover gave Lawrence and the offense excellent field position. Jacksonville quickly converted that opportunity into points. Lawrence found Josh Cameron for a 12-yard touchdown. The score gave Jacksonville a 7-0 advantage early in the second quarter. New England answered with an Andy Borregales field goal. Borregales connected from 35 yards to cut the deficit to 7-3. However, Jacksonville immediately answered with another touchdown. Lawrence found Jakobi Meyers for a 10-yard touchdown. The nine-play drive covered 65 yards. That touchdown pushed Jacksonville’s advantage to 14-3. It also moved Lawrence past Blake Bortles on Jacksonville’s career touchdown list. Lawrence now ranks second in franchise history with 104 touchdown passes.
Patriots Struggle to Find Answers
New England struggled to create consistent offense throughout the game. Maye finished 14-of-25 for 199 yards. He did not throw a touchdown pass. Instead, he threw two interceptions and lost a fumble. The Jaguars defense also recorded three sacks. Ruke Orhorhoro recorded one of those sacks. Bryan Thomas Jr. and DaVon Hamilton shared another sack. The pressure consistently disrupted New England’s passing attack. The Patriots also faced offensive line problems. Greg Van Roten left after playing only 20 snaps. New England eventually turned to Walter Rouse at right guard. That created another challenge for an already struggling offense. Maye faced pressure on 48.4 percent of his drop backs. The Patriots also struggled to establish their running game. Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson combined for only four successful runs. They handled 15 combined carries in the game.
Travis Hunter Makes a Big Play
The Patriots had an opportunity to score late in the first half. Instead, Jacksonville cornerback Travis Hunter ended the threat. Hunter intercepted Maye in the end zone. The play preserved Jacksonville’s 14-3 advantage with 1:02 remaining. It also marked Hunter’s first career NFL interception. The former two-way star made the play when New England needed points most. New England’s defense did create one big takeaway of its own. Marcus Jones intercepted Lawrence earlier in the second quarter. Jones returned the interception 12 yards to the Jacksonville 21-yard line. The Patriots only turned that opportunity into three points.
Jacksonville Pulls Away
The Jaguars completely took over during the third quarter. Lawrence opened the half by continuing to move the football efficiently. Jacksonville eventually produced another lengthy scoring drive. The biggest play came from Parker Washington. He made an impressive 17-yard touchdown catch near the front of the end zone. Washington made the reception despite pass interference. His touchdown pushed Jacksonville’s led to 21-3. Then, everything happened almost instantly. Jarrian Jones intercepted Maye on the next Patriots offensive play. He returned the interception 32 yards. Chris Rodriguez finished the short drive with a five-yard touchdown run. Suddenly, Jacksonville led 28-3. The Jaguars turned a comfortable halftime advantage into a complete rout.
Jaguars Finish Strong
New England managed one more field goal in the fourth quarter. Borregales connected from 40 yards to make it 28-6. Jacksonville answered again. Bhayshul Tuten scored on a one-yard touchdown run with 8:02 remaining. That touchdown completed the scoring at 35-6. The Jaguars also controlled third down throughout the afternoon. Jacksonville converted eight of its 12 third-down opportunities. The Jaguars also went 5-for-5 in the red zone. Those numbers show how consistently Jacksonville finished drives.
A Tough Day for New England
The loss exposed several issues for the Patriots. Their offense struggled with turnovers, pressure and consistency. Maye also acknowledged his own role afterward. He said the Patriots need to eliminate their mistakes. New England entered the season with significant expectations after reaching the AFC Championship Game last season. However, the Patriots now sit at 1-2. The Jaguars, meanwhile, bounced back after losing 20-13 at Denver. They also extended their regular-season home winning streak to six games. Jacksonville’s defense created three takeaways.
Its offense scored five touchdowns and controlled the line of scrimmage. For the Patriots, the challenge gets even tougher next week. New England faces the Buffalo Bills after this lopsided defeat. The Jaguars can take plenty of confidence from their response. They wanted to bounce back after Denver, and they delivered. For one Sunday, Jacksonville looked like the team in complete control. The Patriots, meanwhile, left Jacksonville searching for answers.
The New England Patriots have some work to do they are in a funk that they need to correct in a hurry.
