The New England Patriots earned their first win of the 2026 season Sunday. New England defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 20-3 at Gillette Stadium. The Patriots improved to 1-1 with the victory. Pittsburgh also moved to 1-1 after the loss. The Patriots entered the game looking to erase a disappointing Week 1 performance. They also wanted to protect their home field in their 2026 opener. Instead, New England’s defense controlled the game from the opening quarter. The unit constantly pressured Aaron Rodgers and disrupted Pittsburgh’s offense. TreVeyon Henderson provided an early spark for the Patriots. He returned from an ankle issue and made an immediate impact.
Henderson broke loose for a 39-yard touchdown run. His score gave New England a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. The Steelers struggled to generate consistent offense throughout the afternoon. Pittsburgh managed only 235 total yards in the game. Rodgers completed 23 of 39 passes for 187 yards. He did not throw a touchdown pass. The veteran quarterback also committed two turnovers. He lost a fumble that New England turned into a touchdown. That turnover became one of the game’s biggest moments. Elijah Ponder recovered the fumble and returned it 19 yards for a touchdown. The defensive score gave New England additional breathing room. Meanwhile, the Patriots offense did enough to support the defense.
Drake Maye completed 14 of 22 passes for 208 yards. He threw one interception but avoided the turnover problems that hurt New England last season. Maye did not throw a touchdown pass. Still, he made several important plays through the air. Romeo Doubs also made an impact after a quiet Patriots debut. He caught a 63-yard pass during the third quarter. That reception set up another Patriots scoring opportunity. Andy Borregales converted the field goal to extend New England’s advantage. New England entered halftime with a 10-3 lead. The Patriots then continued controlling the game after halftime. The Steelers could not find the end zone after their second-quarter field goal.
Chris Boswell also missed a 59-yard field-goal attempt. That miss kept Pittsburgh from adding points during an important stretch. The Patriots defense continued creating pressure as the game progressed. Christian Gonzalez spent portions of the afternoon covering DK Metcalf. That matchup limited one of Pittsburgh’s primary receiving options. Rodgers repeatedly had to look elsewhere with Gonzalez shadowing Metcalf. The Steelers struggled to create explosive plays as a result. New England added another field goal in the third quarter. Then the Patriots finished the game with another touchdown. The final score gave New England a convincing 20-3 victory.
The Patriots also avoided an early 0-2 hole under head coach Mike Vrabel. The victory marked an important response after their Week 1 loss. Pittsburgh, meanwhile, suffered its first defeat of the season. The Steelers opened the year with a victory over Atlanta. Their offense struggled in that game, however, and those issues continued against New England. The Steelers averaged only 4.1 yards per play against Atlanta. Their offensive struggles became even more pronounced Sunday. Rodgers now faces plenty of attention following the loss. The 42-year-old quarterback could not find a rhythm against New England’s defense. The Patriots also showed they could win without dominating offensively.
Maye made mistakes, but New England controlled field position and protected its lead. Henderson added the explosive run the offense needed. Most importantly, the defense created points and consistently stopped Pittsburgh. The Patriots will now turn their attention toward another difficult stretch. Jacksonville and Buffalo await over the next two weeks. Pittsburgh will need to regroup quickly after the loss. For New England, however, Sunday provided exactly what the team needed. The Patriots protected Gillette Stadium and evened their record at 1-1. More importantly, their defense showed it can carry the team when the offense struggles. That could become an important storyline as the 2026 season moves forward.
This was a nice bounce back win for the New England Patriots.
