The 2026 Solheim Cup opened with drama, momentum swings and clutch putting. Team Europe and Team USA finished Friday tied at 4-4. Bernardus Golf Club provided a difficult test for both teams. The Netherlands venue featured narrow fairways and plenty of hazards. Both captains also made aggressive pairing decisions throughout the opening day. Anna Nordqvist leads Team Europe, while Angela Stanford captains Team USA. The Americans entered as defending champions after winning in 2024. However, Europe hoped to regain the trophy on home soil. Friday delivered an even battle from the opening tee shot.
Korda and Corpuz Make History
Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz immediately gave Team USA momentum. The American duo defeated Charley Hull and Lottie Woad, 4&3. Woad made her Solheim Cup debut alongside the experienced Hull. Europe actually won the opening hole with a birdie. However, Korda and Corpuz quickly settled into a dominant rhythm. They won three straight holes from Nos. 6 through 8. The Americans eventually reached 5-up with six holes remaining. Woad continued fighting and made important birdie putts. Still, the Americans closed out the match on the 15th hole. The victory gave Korda and Corpuz a remarkable 5-0 foursomes record. They became the first pairing to reach five wins without a loss. Their record also made them the most successful American pairing. Korda and Corpuz now own one of the event’s strongest partnerships.
America Takes Another Early Point
Alison Lee and Lauren Coughlin also gave the Americans a strong start. They defeated Nanna Koerstz Madsen and Celine Boutier, 3&2. Boutier and Madsen briefly grabbed the lead during the match. However, Coughlin helped turn the match around with several big putts. She made an eagle putt on the 10th hole. That shot pushed the Americans two holes ahead. Coughlin later helped extend the advantage on the 13th. The American pair eventually closed out another point. That result gave Team USA a 2-0 lead in the session. Europe then needed answers from its final two pairings.
Europe Responds Before Lunch
Esther Henseleit and Leona Maguire delivered Europe’s first point. They defeated Andrea Lee and Lindy Duncan, 2-up. The European pair established an early advantage. The Americans repeatedly threatened to pull even. However, Maguire produced one of the session’s biggest moments. She rolled in a birdie putt on the 17th hole. That put Europe two holes ahead again. The Americans could not produce another comeback. Henseleit and Maguire then closed out the match with pars. Europe suddenly had the momentum heading into the final foursome’s match.
Maja Stark and Linn Grant then completed the comeback. The Swedish duo defeated Rose Zhang and Jennifer Kupcho, 3&2. Stark and Grant jumped out to a four-hole advantage early. The Americans mounted a brief comeback after the turn. Kupcho made an eagle at the 10th to cut the deficit. Zhang then helped reduce the lead again at the 11th. Still, Stark and Grant regained control down the stretch. They won the match and tied the opening session at 2-2. That marked only the third opening-session split in Solheim Cup history.
Fourballs Bring Even More Drama
The afternoon fourballs produced another fascinating battle. Hull and Woad returned for Europe against Yealimi Noh and Angel Yin. The European duo looked determined to rebound after their morning loss. Hull and Woad built a lead during the middle portion. However, Noh delivered several clutch putts for the Americans. The match eventually finished all square. That result gave each team half a point. Meanwhile, Megan Khang and Alison Lee produced another American victory. They defeated Boutier and Madsen, 4&3. The European pair struggled after another difficult day. Khang and Lee controlled the match during the back nine. Their victory temporarily pushed the Americans ahead on the scoreboard.
Europe’s Rookies Answer Again
Mimi Rhodes and Nastasia Nadaud provided another huge moment. The European rookies defeated Corpuz and Auston Kim, 2&1. Rhodes and Nadaud showed impressive composure throughout the match. They stayed close before producing a late surge. Rhodes made a clutch birdie putt on the 13th hole. That victory helped Europe regain momentum during the afternoon. The rookies then held their advantage until the closing holes. Their performance showed Europe’s young players can handle Solheim Cup pressure. That could become extremely important during the weekend sessions.
Ciganda and Lopez Ramirez Deliver a Half
Carlota Ciganda and Julia Lopez Ramirez faced Korda and Lauren Coughlin. The match remained tight throughout the afternoon. Europe briefly grabbed control before the Americans fought back. Korda and Coughlin eventually moved ahead late in the match. However, Ciganda used her extensive Solheim Cup experience to keep Europe alive. The match reached the final hole with everything still unsettled. Neither side could secure the decisive point. The match finished all square. That half-point helped Europe avoid losing the afternoon session. It also ensured Day One would end completely level.
Everything Remains Open
The final Day One score stood at Europe 4, USA 4. Neither team gained an advantage after eight matches. That result makes Saturday extremely important. Both teams will play another four foursomes matches. They will then play four more fourball matches. Sunday will feature 12 singles matches to decide the Cup. Twenty-eight total points remain available across the competition. Europe needs 14.5 points to regain the trophy. The United States needs 14 points to retain it. A 14-14 finish would allow the Americans to keep the Cup. That rule gives the defending champions a slight advantage entering Saturday.
Still, Europe can feel encouraged after fighting back twice Friday. The Americans can also take confidence from Korda and Corpuz. Their historic partnership already looks like a major storyline. Meanwhile, Europe’s rookies showed they can make an impact. Woad, Rhodes, Nadaud and Lopez Ramirez all gained valuable experience. The 2026 Solheim Cup now has everything fans could want. Friday ended level, but the tension is only beginning. Saturday could determine which team controls the road to Sunday. For now, both sides remain firmly in the fight.
This was a very interesting first day of the Solheim Cup just the way golf fans want it.
