The 2026 NFL season brings another wide-open Super Bowl race. Several teams enter September with legitimate championship dreams. However, a few contenders remain outside the spotlight. That creates an interesting group of Super Bowl dark horses. These teams have enough talent to make a deep playoff run. They also have clear paths toward the Lombardi Trophy. The Los Angeles Rams currently dominate the Super Bowl conversation. Seattle, Buffalo, and Baltimore also sit among the favorites. Still, the NFL rarely follows the script. Here are five dark horses from each conference.
AFC Dark Horses
- Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals might have the AFC’s most dangerous dark-horse profile. Joe Burrow gives Cincinnati an elite quarterback at the most important position. The Bengals also have explosive weapons around him. Ja’Marr Chase remains one of football’s biggest offensive stars. Cincinnati can score with almost anyone when Burrow stays healthy. That alone gives the Bengals a chance against stronger AFC teams. CBS Sports recently called Cincinnati a legitimate Super Bowl contender. That makes the Bengals less mysterious than some other choices. Still, they remain a fascinating team outside the top tier. If their defense improves enough, Cincinnati could become a nightmare. The Bengals already possess the quarterback needed for a championship run.
- Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers could finally make the leap in 2026. Los Angeles has reached 11-6 during each of the past two seasons. Justin Herbert gives the Chargers another elite quarterback. This time, Herbert also gets a fascinating offensive change. Mike McDaniel joined the Chargers as their offensive coordinator. His creative system could unlock another level from Herbert. The Chargers also have promising offensive playmakers around their quarterback. Omarion Hampton gives them another dangerous weapon in the backfield. However, questions remain on defense and along the offensive line. Those concerns could prevent Los Angeles from reaching its ceiling. Still, the Chargers possess enough talent to surprise the AFC. Their recent consistency makes a Super Bowl breakthrough believable.
- Denver Broncos
Denver deserves serious consideration as an AFC dark horse. The Broncos have quietly built one of the conference’s tougher rosters. Their defense gives them a strong foundation. Meanwhile, their offense continues developing around Bo Nix. Denver also plays in an extremely difficult AFC West. That challenge could actually prepare them for January football. The Broncos opened with +2000 Super Bowl odds before moving higher. That movement reflects growing confidence around Denver. The biggest question involves Nix taking another step. If he does, Denver could challenge Kansas City and Los Angeles. The Broncos do not need a perfect regular season. They simply need to reach the playoffs healthy.
- Houston Texans
Houston has quietly assembled enough talent for another playoff run. The Texans already know how to build around a young quarterback. C.J. Stroud remains the centerpiece of their championship hopes. His ability to make big throws gives Houston legitimate upside. The Texans also play in a division without an established powerhouse. That could create a favorable path toward another postseason appearance. Houston needs more consistency against the AFC’s strongest teams. That remains the biggest obstacle between the Texans and Super Bowl contention. Still, playoff football changes everything. A strong defense and a confident Stroud could make Houston dangerous. The Texans also showed their potential during the preseason. They lost 16-13 to Carolina in their August 28 preseason finale. However, preseason results rarely predict January performance.
- Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers might represent the AFC’s biggest long shot. Yet their roster gives them enough pieces to stay competitive. Pittsburgh also plays under head coach Mike McCarthy. That gives the organization an experienced coach with championship experience. The biggest concern remains quarterback play. Aaron Rodgers enters another season at an advanced stage of his career. CBS Sports placed Pittsburgh among its middle-tier teams. However, that ranking also leaves room for a major breakthrough. If Rodgers stays healthy, Pittsburgh could surprise people. The Steelers have historically found ways to win ugly games. That formula becomes valuable once the playoffs begin.
NFC Dark Horses
- Minnesota Vikings
The Vikings might have the strongest dark-horse case in the NFC. Minnesota added Kyler Murray during an important offseason. That move gives Kevin O’Connell another intriguing quarterback project. O’Connell has already developed a reputation for helping quarterbacks thrive. The Vikings also have Justin Jefferson. Few teams can match Minnesota’s receiving talent. Their offensive line provides another reason for optimism. Meanwhile, Brian Flores continues leading an aggressive defensive unit. Recent coverage has identified Minnesota as a potential Super Bowl dark horse. The biggest question involves Murray’s consistency. If Murray returns to his best form, Minnesota becomes dangerous. The Vikings could surprise the NFC’s established powers.
- Detroit Lions
Detroit feels strange on a dark-horse list. However, the Lions have slipped behind several NFC teams in the conversation. That could work in their favor. Jared Goff remains an experienced playoff quarterback. Jahmyr Gibbs gives Detroit one of football’s most explosive backs. Amon-Ra St. Brown also remains a major offensive weapon. Meanwhile, the offensive line remains one of Detroit’s strengths. The Lions also expect better injury luck in 2026. One projection expects Detroit to reach 12-5. Detroit still has defensive concerns. The secondary remains the biggest question entering the season. If that group improves, the Lions can beat anyone. Their offensive talent already gives them a high postseason ceiling.
- Dallas Cowboys
Dallas might be the NFC’s most obvious dark horse. The Cowboys finished with a disappointing record last season. However, their offense remains capable of producing points. Dallas ranked second in total offense during the 2025 season. The Cowboys also upgraded their defense during the offseason. Christian Parker now leads the defense as coordinator. Dallas also added Quinnen Williams and Rashan Gary. Those additions could dramatically improve the pass rush. The Cowboys also drafted Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence. Those young defenders give Dallas additional long-term upside. The biggest question remains consistency. Dallas needs its defense to perform when the stakes rise. If that happens, the Cowboys could finally make noise in January.
- Carolina Panthers
Carolina may offer the biggest NFC surprise. The Panthers quietly enter 2026 with a legitimate opportunity. They also started their preseason with momentum. Carolina defeated Houston 16-13 on August 28. The Panthers have a chance to compete in a wide-open NFC South. None of the division’s teams finished above .500 last season. That creates an important opportunity for Carolina. The Panthers do not need to dominate the NFC. They simply need to win their division and enter the playoffs. From there, their path becomes much more interesting. A young team can become dangerous once it gains confidence. Carolina remains a long shot. However, the division makes this prediction more realistic than it sounds.
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa Bay might be the NFC’s most intriguing sleeper. The Buccaneers remain surrounded by uncertainty after an uneven 2025 season. However, they still possess enough offensive talent to compete. They also play in the same wide-open NFC South. That division gives Tampa Bay a realistic playoff route. A playoff berth would immediately change the team’s possibilities. The Buccaneers lost 19-0 to Jacksonville in their preseason finale. Still, that result should not determine their regular-season outlook. Tampa Bay needs better consistency from its offense. The defense also must create more pressure. If both units improve, the Buccaneers could surprise the NFC. They have enough experience to handle difficult moments.
The Dark Horse with the Best Chance
If I had to choose one AFC dark horse, Cincinnati stands out. Burrow gives the Bengals the quarterback advantage they need. In the NFC, Minnesota gets my pick. The Vikings have an intriguing quarterback, elite receivers, and strong coaching. However, Detroit remains extremely dangerous. Dallas also deserves attention after upgrading its defense. The NFL’s unpredictability makes these teams worth watching. One injury or breakout player can completely change the playoff picture. The Rams currently lead the Super Bowl market after Aaron Donald’s return. Yet the favorites cannot control what happens during the season. That remains the beauty of the NFL. A dark horse only needs one opportunity. Then, everything can change in January.
