College football coaches rarely enter a season with guaranteed job security. However, some coaches face far more pressure than others. The 2026 season features several coaches who need immediate results. Their programs cannot afford another disappointing season. CBS Sports recently ranked 138 FBS coaches based on job security. Three coaches received the highest possible hot-seat rating. Florida State’s Mike Norvell, Wisconsin’s Luke Fickell, and Baylor’s Dave Aranda all received 5.0 ratings. Maryland’s Mike Locksley followed closely with a 4.9 rating. South Carolina’s Shane Beamer received a 4.3 rating. North Carolina’s Bill Belichick rounded out the group with a 4.1 rating. Several games could define their seasons.
Mike Norvell: Florida State vs. SMU
Norvell faces the most immediate pressure in college football. Florida State already opened the season with a 34-17 victory. However, the performance did little to calm concerns surrounding the program. The Seminoles now face No. 19 SMU on September 7. That game could become an early referendum on Norvell’s future. Florida State needs to show significant improvement against a ranked opponent. The Seminoles then face Alabama on September 19. That creates an extremely difficult start for Norvell. A loss to SMU could create enormous pressure before the Alabama game. Florida State’s schedule also includes Louisville, Miami, Clemson, and Florida. Therefore, the SMU game might represent Norvell’s first true make-or-break moment.
Luke Fickell: Wisconsin vs. Notre Dame
Fickell enters perhaps the most important season of his Wisconsin tenure. The Badgers open against No. 4 Notre Dame on September 6. The game will take place at Lambeau Field. That creates a massive stage for Fickell and Wisconsin. The Badgers struggled during Fickell’s first three seasons. Wisconsin also missed bowl games twice during that stretch. CBS Sports gave Fickell a unanimous 5.0 hot-seat rating. A Notre Dame victory would immediately change the conversation. However, Wisconsin cannot rely on one upset. The Badgers also visit Penn State on September 26. They later host USC and visit Iowa. The final game against Minnesota could carry tremendous importance. Fickell needs Wisconsin to look competitive throughout the season. Most importantly, the Badgers need to return to bowl contention.
Dave Aranda: Baylor vs. Auburn
Aranda enters another critical season at Baylor. The Bears open against Auburn on September 5 in Atlanta. Baylor lost the previous meeting with Auburn 38-24 in 2025. This year’s rematch gives Aranda an immediate opportunity to change the narrative. CBS Sports gave Aranda a 5.0 hot-seat rating. He owns a 36-37 record at Baylor entering 2026. The Auburn game matters because Baylor cannot afford another slow start. The Bears also face Colorado and Arizona State early. Later, Baylor plays TCU, Kansas, UCF, Iowa State, BYU, and Texas Tech. Those conference games provide plenty of opportunities for Aranda. However, Baylor needs wins against quality Big 12 opponents. Auburn therefore represents the first major test. A victory could create momentum before conference play begins. A loss could increase the pressure immediately.
Mike Locksley: Maryland vs. Ohio State
Locksley sits directly behind the three coaches with 5.0 ratings. CBS Sports gave him a 4.9 rating entering the season. That makes Maryland’s 2026 campaign extremely important. The Terps face Ohio State on October 10. The game takes place in Columbus. Maryland also visits Nebraska before traveling to Ohio State. Those two games could reveal whether the Terps can compete in the Big Ten. Maryland then hosts Wisconsin on November 14. The Terps also travel to USC on November 21. Penn State visits Maryland for the regular-season finale. That schedule creates several major opportunities. However, Locksley needs more than competitive losses. Maryland needs meaningful conference victories and postseason momentum. The Ohio State game stands out as his biggest early measuring stick.
Shane Beamer: South Carolina vs. Georgia
Beamer faces a brutal SEC schedule in 2026. CBS Sports gave him a 4.3 hot-seat rating. That ranking places him firmly in the danger zone. South Carolina opens conference play against Mississippi State. Then, the Gamecocks travel to Alabama on September 26. They later face Florida, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Georgia, and Clemson. That stretch leaves very little room for mistakes. The Georgia game could become Beamer’s biggest test. The Gamecocks host Georgia on November 21. South Carolina then travels to Clemson one week later. Those final rivalry games could define the season. Beamer needs signature victories to quiet the growing pressure. Beating Georgia would provide exactly that. Winning against Clemson would create even more momentum. However, South Carolina needs consistent conference success. One upset alone might not protect Beamer’s job.
Bill Belichick: North Carolina vs. Clemson
Belichick enters his second season at North Carolina. His 4.1 hot-seat rating might surprise some fans. Still, CBS Sports placed him among the coaches facing serious pressure. North Carolina already opened 2026 with a 15-10 victory over TCU. That victory gives Belichick an early boost. However, the Tar Heels face Clemson on September 19. The game will take place at Memorial Stadium. That matchup could provide an early measuring stick for Belichick. North Carolina also hosts Notre Dame on October 3. Miami visits Chapel Hill later in October. The Tar Heels also face Duke, Pitt, Louisville, Virginia, and NC State. Those games could determine whether North Carolina reaches the ACC title picture. Belichick does not need to win every marquee matchup. However, North Carolina needs clear progress. A strong conference record would make the hot-seat discussion disappear quickly.
The Hot Seat Could Change Quickly
College football’s coaching landscape can change within weeks. One major upset can save a coach’s job. Likewise, several losses can create an unstoppable wave of pressure. Norvell faces the earliest major test against SMU. Fickell gets his opportunity against Notre Dame. Aranda starts with Auburn. Locksley faces Ohio State after a difficult road trip to Nebraska. Beamer gets several chances against SEC heavyweights. Belichick gets Clemson and Notre Dame early. Therefore, these games carry more than ordinary importance. They could shape conference races and playoff hopes. More importantly, they could shape coaching decisions. The 2026 season will demand results from these six coaches. For some, a few signature victories could change everything. For others, another disappointing season could end their tenure. That makes the 2026 coaching hot seat one of college football’s biggest storylines.
These games are very important to these coaches that could get their pink slips if they lose them.
