The ACC enters 2026 with one of college football’s most intriguing coaching groups. Miami reached the national championship game last season. Duke also captured the ACC title. Meanwhile, Virginia Tech made one of the biggest coaching hires in the country. The Hokies brought in former Penn State coach James Franklin. Several other programs also have coaches with championship experience. However, the conference features plenty of uncertainty toward the bottom. I ranked all 17 ACC head coaches entering the 2026 season. I considered resumes, recent results, development, recruiting, and program trajectory. Those factors also shaped Athlon Sports’ rankings.
- Mario Cristobal — Miami
Cristobal earns the top spot after Miami’s remarkable 2025 season. The Hurricanes reached the national championship game. Miami finished 13-3 last season. The Hurricanes also won three College Football Playoff games. That run changed the conversation surrounding Cristobal. Miami went just 12-13 during his first two seasons. Since then, the Hurricanes have gone 23-6. Cristobal still has one major goal. He needs to win Miami’s first ACC championship. Nevertheless, his recent results make him the conference’s top coach.
- Dabo Swinney — Clemson
Swinney owns the strongest championship resume in the ACC. He has won two national championships with Clemson. He also owns a 187-53 record with the Tigers. Clemson has won nine ACC championships during his tenure. However, recent results have created some questions. Clemson finished 7-6 last season. The Tigers also have not finished higher than No. 13 nationally since 2020. Still, Swinney’s history keeps him near the top.
- James Franklin — Virginia Tech
Franklin enters the ACC after his surprising departure from Penn State. Virginia Tech now hopes he can revive the program. Franklin won 104 games at Penn State. He also won the Big Ten championship in 2016. Penn State reached the College Football Playoff semifinal last season. However, the Nittany Lions fired Franklin during the 2025 campaign. Still, his overall resume remains impressive. Virginia Tech also increased its investment in football. That combination gives Franklin tremendous upside in Blacksburg.
- Jeff Brohm — Louisville
Brohm remains one of the ACC’s best offensive coaches. Louisville has won at least nine games during each of his first three seasons. The Cardinals won 10 games in 2023. They also reached the ACC Championship Game that season. Brohm owns a 94-56 record as an FBS head coach. That total includes stops at Western Kentucky and Purdue. Louisville has the talent to return to Charlotte. Therefore, Brohm deserves a spot near the top.
- Rhett Lashlee — SMU
Lashlee has quickly established SMU as an ACC contender. The Mustangs reached the ACC Championship Game in 2024. They also reached the College Football Playoff that season. SMU finished 11-3 during that campaign. The Mustangs followed that with a 9-4 record in 2025. They also went 6-2 in ACC play. Lashlee owns a 38-16 record over the last four seasons. His program has developed an identity and winning culture. That makes him one of the ACC’s rising coaching stars.
- Brent Key— Georgia Tech
Key continues moving up the coaching ladder. Georgia Tech finished 9-4 last season. The Yellow Jackets also pushed into ACC championship contention. Key has transformed the program since taking over. Georgia Tech owns a 27-20 record under his leadership. The Yellow Jackets have also posted winning ACC records for three straight years. That progress deserves recognition. Key still needs a championship appearance. However, Georgia Tech looks much healthier under his leadership.
- Manny Diaz — Duke
Diaz deserves plenty of credit for his work at Duke. The Blue Devils won nine games in each of his first two seasons. Duke also defeated Virginia to win the ACC championship last season. That represented the program’s first conference title since 1989. Duke went 11-5 in ACC play across the last two seasons. The loss of quarterback Darian Mensah creates a major challenge. Still, Diaz has already proven his coaching ability.
- Dave Doeren — NC State
Doeren has quietly built one of the ACC’s most consistent programs. He took over NC State in 2013. The Wolfpack have gone 95-70 under his leadership. They have also reached 11 bowl games since 2014. NC State has produced only two losing seasons during the last 12 years. Doeren has also won at least eight games in seven of eight seasons. However, one achievement remains missing. Doeren has never reached the ACC Championship Game. That keeps him outside the conference’s top tier.
- Pat Narduzzi — Pittsburgh
Narduzzi continues producing winning seasons at Pittsburgh. He owns an 80-61 record during his Panthers tenure. Pittsburgh also won the ACC championship in 2021. The Panthers finished second in the conference last season. Pitt went 6-2 in ACC play during 2025. Narduzzi has also produced a .500 or better conference record eight times. His consistency keeps him firmly inside the top ten.
- Tony Elliott — Virginia
Elliott made perhaps the biggest improvement among ACC coaches’ last season. Virginia went 11-3 and reached the ACC Championship Game. Those 11 victories set a new single-season school record. Elliott entered 2025 with an 11-23 record at Virginia. He completely changed the conversation around his program. He also earned ACC Coach of the Year honors. Now comes the difficult part. Elliott must prove that 2025 represented a new standard. A repeat performance could send him much higher.
- Mike Norvell — Florida State
Norvell enters 2026 under enormous pressure. Florida State has struggled badly since its 2023 breakthrough. The Seminoles went 13-1 during that 2023 season. They also won the ACC championship. However, Florida State went 2-10 in 2024. The Seminoles followed that with a 5-7 record last season. Florida State also owns a 3-13 ACC record across the last two seasons. The Seminoles have not won a road game since 2023. Norvell has the experience to turn things around. Yet, he needs results quickly.
- Jake Dickert — Wake Forest
Dickert delivered one of the ACC’s biggest coaching surprises last season. Wake Forest finished 9-4 in his first year. The Demon Deacons also defeated Mississippi State in their bowl game. That gave the program its first postseason win since 2022. Wake Forest also defeated Virginia on the road. Now Dickert must prove he can sustain that success. If he does, Wake Forest could become a dangerous ACC team.
- Fran Brown — Syracuse
Brown showed his potential during his first season at Syracuse. The Orange finished 10-3 in 2024. However, Syracuse fell to 3-9 last season. Quarterback Steve Angeli’s injury hurt the offense significantly. Brown still has plenty of coaching upside. He has already demonstrated that he can build a winning team. Now Syracuse needs consistency. A bounce-back season would improve Brown’s standing considerably.
- Bill Belichick — North Carolina
Belichick remains one of football’s greatest coaches. However, his first college season created plenty of questions. North Carolina finished 4-8 during his debut campaign. The Tar Heels also went 2-6 in ACC play. That record makes this ranking difficult to avoid. Still, Belichick hired Bobby Petrino to improve the offense. His NFL resume remains extraordinary. Yet, college football demands different skills. Therefore, Belichick needs to prove he can succeed at this level.
- Bill O’Brien — Boston College
O’Brien owns an impressive coaching resume. He previously coached Penn State and the Houston Texans. However, Boston College has struggled during his tenure. The Eagles went 7-6 during his debut season. Then, the program collapsed to 2-10 last year. Boston College won only one ACC game. O’Brien needs a significant turnaround in 2026. Otherwise, his position could become increasingly difficult.
- Tosh Lupoi — California
Lupoi enters his first season as an FBS head coach. That makes him one of the conference’s biggest unknowns. He has plenty of experience as a defensive coordinator. His previous stops included Alabama, Oregon, Washington, and NFL teams. Lupoi also helped Oregon build strong defenses. California needs that expertise after allowing 31.5 points per ACC game last season. Still, becoming a head coach presents a completely different challenge.
- Tavita Pritchard — Stanford
Pritchard takes over Stanford after serving as an assistant with the Washington Commanders. He also knows Stanford extremely well. Pritchard played quarterback there from 2006 through 2009. He later worked as a Stanford assistant from 2013 through 2022. However, Pritchard has never coached an FBS program as a head coach. That makes Stanford’s 2026 season a major learning experience. Still, his familiarity with the school could help.
Final 2026 ACC Coach Rankings
Mario Cristobal — Miami
Dabo Swinney — Clemson
James Franklin — Virginia Tech
Jeff Brohm — Louisville
Rhett Lashlee — SMU
Brent Key — Georgia Tech

The ACC has a fascinating mix of proven winners and rising coaches. Cristobal now sits at the top after Miami’s championship run. Swinney remains close behind because of his incredible Clemson resume. Franklin also brings major expectations to Virginia Tech. Meanwhile, Lashlee, Key, Diaz, and Elliott could all climb this list. Their programs enter 2026 with legitimate reasons for optimism. At the other end, several coaches face defining seasons. Norvell, O’Brien, and Belichick all need significant improvement. Ultimately, the ACC coaching race could shift quickly. One strong season can change how the entire conference views a coach.
