New York Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay has no regrets about his comments regarding Boston Red Sox fans. Kay made the remarks in June during a Yankees-Red Sox game at Fenway Park. At the time, Boston sat far behind New York in the American League East. The Yankees entered June 26 with a 48-31 record. They also held first place in the division.
Meanwhile, Boston carried a 32-46 record into that matchup. The Red Sox sat 15.5 games behind New York in last place. Despite the huge gap, Red Sox fans still chanted, “Yankees suck” during the game. Kay questioned the chant during the YES Network broadcast. He pointed toward the standings and questioned whether Boston fans could see them. His comments quickly became another chapter in the rivalry.
However, the standings have changed dramatically since then. Boston has surged up the American League East standings over the past month. The Red Sox entered Saturday riding a nine-game winning streak. They have also won 32 of their last 37 games. That incredible run pushed Boston into third place in the division.
More importantly, the Red Sox moved within half a game of the Yankees. That turnaround gave Kay’s June comments a new life among Boston supporters. Red Sox fans have used the remarks as motivation while celebrating their team’s remarkable resurgence. However, Kay does not believe he said anything wrong. Speaking Friday on “The Michael Kay Show,” the Yankees broadcaster defended his original comments. He also rejected the idea that he now regrets making them.
Kay argued that his statement reflected Boston’s situation at the time. He also pointed out that many Red Sox fans wanted major changes during June. According to Kay, Boston supporters had criticized the team heavily during its struggles. Some fans called for chief baseball officer Craig Breslow to leave. Others wanted principal owner John Henry to sell the team. Kay believes those reactions show how dramatically Boston’s fortunes have changed.
He also accused fans of rewriting history because the Red Sox are winning now. Kay said he would not make the same statement today. However, he believes the comment accurately described Boston’s situation when he made it. That distinction has not stopped Red Sox fans from targeting Kay. Boston’s recent winning streak has only made the situation more entertaining.
Friday night provided another twist in the developing rivalry. Boston dominated the Athletics with a 13-1 victory. That result put additional pressure on the Yankees to hold onto their division lead. New York entered the ninth inning against the Atlanta Braves trailing 2-0. The Yankees then rallied to tie the game in the ninth.
They eventually won 3-2 in extra innings. The victory allowed New York to maintain its half-game advantage over Boston. Still, the Yankees face significant challenges moving forward. Several important players remain on the injured list. That group includes outfielders Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger.
Designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton also remains sidelined. Starting pitcher Carlos Rodón is another key Yankees player on the injured list. Those absences could become increasingly important as Boston continues its push. The Red Sox have already erased most of the enormous deficit they faced earlier this summer. Now, they have the Yankees directly in their sights.
If Boston eventually takes over the division lead, Kay could face even more criticism from Red Sox fans. For now, though, the Yankees still hold the edge. Kay also remains confident about his original assessment. He insists that context matters when judging what he said.
The Red Sox have clearly changed their story since June. Their recent success has transformed the American League East race.Meanwhile, the Yankees must find a way to withstand Boston’s charge. Their injured stars could play a major role in that battle.With the two rivals separated by only half a game, the race has become far more intriguing. And if Boston finally moves ahead, expect Red Sox fans to make sure Michael Kay hears about it.
