The Boston Red Sox could not have scripted a better ending to July. They closed the month with a 9-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night. More importantly, they completed the best full-month winning percentage in franchise history.
Boston finished July with a remarkable 21-4 record. That .840 winning percentage set a new franchise mark over a full month. The club also recorded its most victories in a single month since August 2004.The Red Sox now enter August full of confidence. They have transformed themselves from a struggling club into one of baseball’s hottest teams.
Interim manager Chad Tracy praised his team’s turnaround after another impressive victory. He admitted the club desperately needed a strong month. However, even he acknowledged the team exceeded expectations. Boston’s recent surge has changed the outlook for the season. Now, the challenge shifts toward maintaining that momentum over the final two months.
The victory over the Dodgers showcased Boston’s growing confidence and depth. The coaching staff executed its pitching plan almost perfectly. Ranger Suárez made another step in his return from a groin injury. He started the game before handing things over to Brayan Bello. Although Suárez battled through some trouble, he still gave the Red Sox valuable innings. He allowed three runs on four hits and two walks across 4 2/3 innings.
After that, Boston’s bullpen took complete control. Bello continued thriving in his unique piggyback role. The right-hander delivered four scoreless innings while earning the victory. He improved to 3-6 on the season.His recent success has become one of Boston’s biggest surprises.The Red Sox sent Bello to Triple-A during June. They recalled him on July 12 to serve as a multi-inning reliever.
Since returning, Bello has embraced the assignment. He threw 4 1/3 relief innings against the New York Mets during his first appearance back. Ten days later, he tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings against the Baltimore Orioles. He followed that effort with another four scoreless innings against the Dodgers.His ability to stay sharp despite pitching only once every seven days has impressed the coaching staff.
Chad Tracy admitted the club will discuss Bello’s future role. Boston faces a demanding stretch after Monday’s off day. The team began a run of 16 consecutive games, creating opportunities for creative pitching decisions.Bello welcomed the possibility of returning to the starting rotation. Still, he also understands the value of his current assignment.
He said the extra rest allows him to consistently throw between 96 and 97 mph. That added velocity has helped him attack hitters aggressively. While the pitching staff controlled the game late, Boston’s offense delivered another balanced performance.The Red Sox built an early lead before Shohei Ohtani briefly swung momentum toward Los Angeles. Ohtani’s fifth-inning home run gave the Dodgers a short-lived advantage.
Boston answered immediately. Ceddanne Rafaela crushed a go-ahead two-run homer during a five-run seventh inning. Andruw Monasterio followed with a two-run double that broke the game open. Jarren Duran also contributed with an RBI groundout during the rally. He finished the night with two RBIs.
The victory improved Boston to 4-1 on its seven-game California road trip. Earlier in the trip, the Red Sox won three of four games against the Athletics. Not everything went perfectly, however. Willson Contreras exited after Will Klein struck him in the helmet with a 95.4 mph fastball during the third inning. The Red Sox removed Contreras for precautionary reasons.
Initial testing produced encouraging results. However, the club planned additional testing Saturday before determining his availability moving forward.Boston continued winning despite that scare.Since the All-Star break, the Red Sox own a 12-3 record. Even more impressive, they have gone 21-3 since July 3.
Despite the incredible run, Boston still trails by 6 1/2 games in the American League East. The club currently sits in third place. Nevertheless, confidence continues growing inside the clubhouse.Bello believes this roster has everything necessary to make a deep postseason run. He said the team continues winning while staying healthy. He also believes the Red Sox possess World Series-caliber talent.
As Boston chases October, attention around baseball also centers on the approaching Aug. 3 Trade Deadline. Starting pitching headlines this year’s market. Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal remains the biggest available name. The two-time Cy Young Award winner could command a massive return if Detroit decides to sell. Several controllable starters also attract heavy interest.
Hunter Greene of the Cincinnati Reds, Reid Detmers and José Soriano of the Los Angeles Angels, and Emerson Hancock of the Seattle Mariners all appear available under the right circumstances. Veteran options also remain on the market. Kevin Gausman, Freddy Peralta, Robbie Ray, Trevor Rogers, Casey Mize, Clay Holmes, Foster Griffin, Dustin May, Brady Singer and Shane Bieber could strengthen playoff rotations before the deadline.
With Boston playing its best baseball of the season, the front office now faces important decisions. The Red Sox have climbed back into postseason contention through outstanding pitching, timely hitting and consistent execution.July delivered one of the greatest months in franchise history.Now, Boston hopes that unforgettable stretch serves as the beginning of something much bigger.
