Conor McGregor’s long-awaited return to the UFC ended in heartbreaking fashion at UFC 329. The former two-division champion suffered a serious right knee injury just seconds into his welterweight fight against Max Holloway. As a result, the bout ended only 69 seconds into the opening round with a TKO loss for McGregor. The injury occurred almost immediately after the fight began in Las Vegas. McGregor appeared to hurt his right knee during an early exchange with Holloway. Although he tried to continue, he could not recover from the damage.
Consequently, the referee stopped the contest after recognizing McGregor could no longer defend himself effectively. Despite the disappointing result, McGregor quickly made it clear that he has no plans to retire. Early Sunday morning, he posted a message on X that expressed both frustration and determination. He promised fans that he would recover and compete again once he regains his health. “I will overcome this,” McGregor wrote. “I will not be deterred. I will return.” Those words reflected the mindset that helped McGregor become one of the biggest stars in mixed martial arts.
Throughout his career, he has repeatedly bounced back from setbacks. Therefore, he believes this injury will become another obstacle rather than the end of his fighting career. The defeat marked McGregor’s first fight in five years. He had not competed since July 2021, when he suffered a gruesome broken left leg during his trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier. That injury required extensive rehabilitation and kept him out of competition far longer than anyone expected. As a result, fans eagerly anticipated his comeback against Holloway.
McGregor revealed that he felt fully prepared before stepping into the Octagon. He rejected speculation suggesting he entered the fight with an existing injury. Instead, he insisted he felt healthy, focused, and ready to perform at his highest level. In another social media post, McGregor explained how shocked he felt after the unexpected injury. He said he had trained well throughout his camp and believed he entered the fight in excellent condition. Because of that preparation, he struggled to understand how everything unraveled so quickly.
“I was so sharp and so ready for this fight,” McGregor wrote. “I cannot believe what has happened.”He also dismissed rumors claiming he looked uncomfortable while walking to the cage. According to McGregor, those observations lacked any truth. He explained that he remained calm, confident, and mentally prepared before the opening bell.
McGregor admitted that the outcome left him stunned. Furthermore, he shared a personal reflection about his emotional state after the loss. He wrote that he felt as though he faced significant adversity but refused to let it consume him. He added that he planned to attend church the following day as part of his response to the difficult moment.
Meanwhile, UFC CEO Dana White addressed McGregor’s injury during the post-fight press conference. White said doctors believe McGregor tore his anterior cruciate ligament, commonly known as the ACL. However, medical staff had not officially confirmed the diagnosis immediately after the event. Additional testing will determine the full extent of the injury.
An ACL tear often requires surgery and several months of rehabilitation. Consequently, McGregor could face another lengthy absence from competition if doctors confirm the diagnosis. Such an outcome would delay another comeback and extend an already difficult stretch in his career. The loss also represented another setback for one of the sport’s most recognizable athletes. McGregor previously held
UFC championships in both the featherweight and lightweight divisions. His accomplishments helped transform him into one of the organization’s biggest global attractions. However, injuries and long layoffs have limited his appearances inside the Octagon during recent years. Max Holloway, meanwhile, earned the victory after the unexpected stoppage. Although the ending lacked the dramatic exchanges many fans expected, Holloway still left Las Vegas with an important win over one of the UFC’s biggest names.
For McGregor, the focus now shifts toward recovery. He remains determined to overcome another serious injury despite facing another difficult rehabilitation process. His latest statements showed confidence rather than discouragement. Whether that return happens next year or later will depend on his medical progress. Nevertheless, McGregor insists this chapter will not define the end of his fighting career. Instead, he believes it marks another challenge that he intends to conquer before stepping back into the Octagon once again.
