As the NBA shifts its offseason focus to the 2026 Summer League, the 2026 free agency period has already begun to cool down. Most notable names have agreed to new deals, while a few are still debating their future. The biggest name left in free agency is, without a doubt,t LeBron James. James would notify the Los Angeles Lakers at the end of June that, after eight seasons with the team, he would not be returning to the team for the 2026-27 season. He would average 20.9 PPG, 6.1 RPG, and 7.2 APG in 60. Regular season games, before the Lakers were swept in the second round of the 2026 Western Conference Playoffs.
Since then, there has been speculation from all over the league about where James will end up playing for a record 24th season, if he does not choose to retire. Four teams in particular have been linked to James as the potential last destination of his legendary career: the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, and Philadelphia 76ers. Each has their own positive and negative takeaways for LeBron joining, and his decision may be dragged out deep into the offseason.
Cleveland Cavaliers
If the 2026-27 season is LeBron’s final season in the league, there is no better place to have a farewell tour than the place where his legendary career started in 2003: the Cleveland Cavaliers. In his 23-season career, James would play 11 seasons in Cleveland across two stints. From 2003 to 2010, James led the Cavs to one Finals appearance and five playoff appearances in his first seven seasons with the team. In his second stint from 2014-2018, James would lead the Cavs to four more Finals appearances and to the 2016 NBA Championship after being down 1-3 against the Golden State Warriors.
The Cavs can only offer James a veteran’s minimum contract worth $3.9 million, but have a strong team that reached the Eastern Conference Finals this past season. Earlier this week, Cavs guard Donovan Mitchell signed a four-year, $273 million contract extension, showing his commitment to the team going forward. The Cavs also have another young star in Evan Mobley and are expected to re-sign James Harden, who may be waiting for a LeBron decision to sign a new deal with the team. The addition of James may be enough to get the Cavs to the Eastern Conference Finals again or to the Finals, but regardless of the finish, it would be a storybook ending to James’ career.
Miami Heat
In between his two Cleveland Stints, James would take his talents to South Beach and join the Miami Heat, forming a big three alongside Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. The Heat would make the Finals every year from 2011-2014, losing in 2011 and 2014 while winning back-to-back championships in 2012 and 2013. The Heat would reach the Finals two-times post-LeBron but have entered a new era in the summer of 2026.
The new era for Miami would kick off with the trade for former Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, who had been tied to the Heat for much of the calendar year. Giannis will be paired alongside All-Star center Bam Adebayo. The Heat also have a former All-Star in Andrew Wiggins. The team does not have as much depth as other teams due to cap restrictions, but they can offer him the full mid-level exception worth $15.5 million. In addition, Miami is reportedly open to offering his son, Bronny James, a two-way contract if he signs with the team. James would likely be criticized for attempting to ring-chase, but with rumors suggesting he is focused on happiness, playing with another generational talent like Giannis Antetokounmpo in another familiar organization could be exciting for LeBron.
Golden State Warriors
The team that was seen as the leader in the LeBron sweepstakes before LeBron said he wasn’t returning to the Lakers, joining the Golden State Warriors would give the league the superstar duo of Stephen Curry and LeBron James, attempting to win a fifth championship ring together. Over the last 15 seasons, no player has been tied to LeBron as much as Curry, playing against LeBron and the Cavaliers in four straight Finals. The two would finally get a chance to play together as teammates in the 2024 Olympics, helping lead the United States to another gold medal.
The Warriors also have Draymond Green, who has always had a close relationship with LeBron, and would also opt out of his contract to help lure LeBron to Golden State with a better deal. The Warriors can reportedly offer LeBron $15.1 million, just short of the full mid-level exception Miami can offer. For LeBron, Golden State offers camaraderie and the chance to play with Stephen Curry for a full season. While many would also likely call this a ring-chasing decision, and the Warriors will always be known as Steph’s team, LeBron joining the Lakers would give the league a superstar duo of the two biggest names of the last 15 years.
Philadelphia 76ers
A late contender in the LeBron sweepstakes, the Philadelphia 76ers may be the best fit for James, but would also be seen as the most blatant attempt to chase a ring in what may be his final season. Trading for 2024 Finals MVP Jaylen Brown out of nowhere, the Sixers went from a team with a questionable future to arguably the second-best team in the Eastern Conference behind the 2026 NBA Champion New York Knicks.
Tyrese Maxey is a top 10 player in tin the league, while Jaylen Brown has been underrated by his critics across the league. Joel Embiid, despite likely being at the end of his prime, still has plenty of big performances left in the tank. VJ Edgecombe, only entering his second season, is a young star in the making. Like Cleveland and Miami, the Sixers can only offer James $3.9 million veterans minimum. With the minimum expectations for the new look Sixers being the Eastern Conference Finals, Philadelphia would be LeBron’s best shot at a chance for a fifth championship in the East.
Minnesota Timberwolves
A late contender in the LeBron sweepstakes and a long shot, the Minnesota Timberwolves have the talent, can offer more than the vet’s minimum (believed to be over $6 million), and offer James a unique opportunity no other LeBron contender can offer. Despite making the Western Conference Finals two out of the last three seasons, Minnesota have never reached the NBA Finals, something that would only add to James’ legacy. If James could help Minnesota over the hump and win their first NBA Championship, it would be the cherry on the top of his career and another achievement to add to his GOAT case, winning a championship with four different teams.
Minnesota starts with their superstar guard Anthony Edwards, who has been missing a true number two for nearly his entire career. The Wolves would trade for LaMelo Ball, but the two have not shared the court yet. The Wolves have a strong roster include a multiple-time Defensive Player of the Year in Rudy Gobert, Ayo Dosunmu, who had a career year, and Jaden McDaniels, who is expected to leap next season. Like many teams, joining the Wolves could label LeBron a ring chaser, but with what it could mean for the end of his career and legacy, Minnesota should be considered an option for James.
