As the college baseball landscape shifts its attention to Omaha for the Men’s College World Series, New England’s elite wood-bat prospects are taking center stage in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL). Comprising seven teams, the league features a grueling 60-game regular-season schedule that stretches until August 8. When the dust settles, the top four teams will earn a spot in the playoffs to crown a summer champion.
With the season now 13 games deep, a clear picture is starting to emerge. The New Britain Bees currently hold a narrow one-game cushion over the rest of the field, while a seven-game gap separates the top spot from the last-place Lowell Spinners (3-10). It is still early in the summer grind, meaning plenty of roster shuffling and standings shakeups are bound to happen, but here is how the league shapes up as the heat turns up.
New Britain Bees (8-3)
The Outlook: At the top of the mountain sit the Bees, holding a slim lead at the quarter-turn of the season.
At the Plate: New Britain currently ranks third in the FCBL with a collective .278 batting average. While the lineup has generated a steady 20 extra-base hits, they have put up a surprising lack of over-the-fence power—slugging just 2 home runs, which ties them for the fewest in the league.
On the Bump: The Bees are winning with a run-suppression model. They rank second in the league with a stellar 4.18 team ERA, while surrendering a league-low 46 earned runs. Furthermore, they are tied with Norwich for the absolute fewest home runs allowed (1).
Player to Watch: Fays Baig has been the definitive anchor out of the bullpen. In his 6.2 innings of work, Baig has put together a 2-0 record and secured the team’s lone save. He has racked up 8 strikeouts while holding opposing hitters to a microscopic .240 batting average against, overcoming an elevated 5.40 ERA.
Vermont Lake Monsters (9-4)
The Outlook: Sitting right on New Britain’s heels are the red-hot Lake Monsters. Vermont has posted a 6-4 record over their last 10 games and is riding an active two-game winning streak.
The Offensive Juggernaut: Vermont boasts the most terrifying offense in the league, operating as the lone FCBL team to carry a team batting average over the .300 threshold at a blistering .305 clip. Their patience matches their power, leading the league with a .405 on-base percentage, fueled partly by their willingness to crowd the plate (ranking second with 26 hit-by-pitches).
FCBL Player of the Week: Jack Fitzgerald is putting up video-game numbers. He leads the league in RBIs (16), doubles (5), and total bases (31), while carrying a monster .689 slugging percentage.
Supporting Fire: Bryan Richmond has been a model of elite consistency, batting .458 through 11 games with a .542 slugging percentage and a .519 on-base percentage.
The Pitching Weapon: Brady Lane has served as a Swiss Army knife on the mound, pacing the staff with 2 wins and 2 saves despite a high-contact .278 batting average against. Marcus Tarfano has also recorded a clutch save in his two relief appearances.
Norwich Sea Unicorns (5-6)
The Outlook: The defending league champions are treading water early on. Sitting 3.0 games back of New Britain, the Sea Unicorns have gone 5-5 over their last 10 games, though a current two-game winning streak suggests they are finding their footing.
The Struggles: Offense has been remarkably hard to come by for Norwich. They are languishing at the bottom of the league with a meager .221 team batting average and are the only franchise slugging under .300, sitting at .279. To manufacture runs, they have had to take bruises, leading the FCBL with 28 hit-by-pitches. Kenny Noe has carried the bulk of the run production, driving in 10 runs in just 7 games.
The Silver Lining: While the team carries an elevated 5.72 ERA, Matt Tabet has been completely unhittable. Through 14.0 dominant innings of work, Tabet has racked up a 2-0 record, an unblemished 0.00 ERA, and a microscopic 0.57 WHIP. He has allowed just 3 hits all summer, suffocating opposing batters to a comical .067 average.
FCBL Pitcher of the Week: Nigel Cross
The individual performance of the week belongs to Nashua Silver Knights right-hander Nigel Cross (Wentworth Institute of Technology). Last Friday night, Cross put together an absolute masterpiece at Dodd Stadium against the defending champion Sea Unicorns.
In a dominant 16-0 blowout, Cross threw a rain-shortened complete game, striking out 9 batters while surrendering just 1 hit and issuing absolutely zero walks. With that gem under his belt, Cross has shoved his way to a 0.93 ERA with 13 strikeouts through 9.2 innings pitched this summer.
