As Major League Baseball officially crosses the two-month mark of the 2026 regular season, the league has officially entered a state of pure chaos. The final week of May (5/26–5/31) featured a wild mix of historic turnarounds, jaw-dropping milestones, devastating injury blows, and front offices making desperate throws of the dice.
Here is all the big news you missed from around the diamond this past week.
The South Side Renaissance Meets a Major Hamstring Hump
Arguably the most stunning storyline of the 2026 season continues to unfold in Chicago. Just two years removed from setting the modern MLB record for losses (41–121 in 2024), the Chicago White Sox (32-27) finished the month of May firmly holding an American League Wild Card spot. Behind early-season Cy Young candidate Davis Martin, the South Siders capped off their week with a gritty series win over the Detroit Tigers.
However, it wasn’t all celebration on the South Side. Star slugger Munetaka Murakami was forced to exit Friday night’s game against Detroit after pulling up with a right hamstring injury that turned out to be a Grade 2 strain. He is now on the10-day IL and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.
The Streaks and Slides: Cubs Snap a Skid, Tigers Plummets
If you want stability, do not look toward the North Side of Chicago. Manager Craig Counsell’s Chicago Cubs (32-28) have established themselves as the streakiest team in baseball. After already putting together multiple 10-game winning streaks this year, the Cubs spent the early part of the week mired in a miserable 10-game losing streak. They finally snapped the skid mid-week but have officially dropped out of the crowded NL Central playoff picture for the time being.
Meanwhile, things are looking downright apocalyptic for the Detroit Tigers. Since reigning two-time AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal landed on the IL on May 4, Detroit has been entirely lost at sea, dropping 19 of their last 23 games while averaging a measly 2.6 runs per game.
Acuña Rules Fenway with a Monolithic Blast
Interleague play brought the powerhouse Atlanta Braves (40-20) to Boston for a highly anticipated showdown at Fenway Park, and Ronald Acuña Jr. made sure the Green Monster got an absolute show.
On Thursday night, Acuña completely turned the tide of the game by crushing a monumental grand slam over the left-field wall. The blast helped cement the Braves as the first team in the majors to reach the 40-win plateau this season, a resounding answer to their sub-.500 finish a year ago.

Giants Defy Conventions, Call Up Prospect Straight From Double-A
Sitting at a dismal 23-36 and watching their season rapidly slip away, the San Francisco Giants‘ front office decided to completely blow up the standard development manual. On Saturday, May 30, the Giants boldly called up top hitting prospect Jonah Cox—completely bypassing Triple-A.
While baseball purists scratched their heads at the desperation move, it immediately injected life into a dormant offense. On Sunday, May 31, the Giants’ bats exploded at Coors Field, trouncing the Colorado Rockies 19–6 in a game that felt more like a football score.
