The University of Tampa Spartans continued their grueling road trip in Americus, Georgia, facing off against the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes. The Hurricanes proved to be the toughest challenge the Spartans have encountered in the 2026 season. Entering the series, Georgia Southwestern held a 12-8 record, while UT carried only a single loss. Although this was a non-conference matchup that would not affect their Sunshine State Conference standings, the series was a massive litmus test for both programs. It promised to be a battle of high-powered offenses against two of the most elite pitching staffs in the region.
Game One
The Hurricanes handed the ball to Evan Koehler, who delivered a masterful performance. He completely stifled the red-hot Spartans lineup, allowing only four hits while racking up 15 strikeouts. Georgia Southwestern struck first with a run in the third inning and maintained that lead until the top of the sixth when UT managed to tie the game. The Spartans counter-punched with a strong start from Robert Satin, who went seven innings and surrendered just five hits and one run via a solo home run. He issued only one walk and struck out nine. However, the Hurricanes managed to find the winning run in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Sammy Beir. It was a rare night where the Spartans were knocked off their rhythm, being out-hit 8-4 in a narrow 2-1 defeat.
Game Two
After the frustrating opening loss, the Spartans wasted no time re-establishing their offensive identity. They exploded for five runs in the top of the first inning to set an immediate tone. The Hurricanes attempted to keep pace with two runs in the bottom half of the frame, but the scoring dried up until the sixth inning when Georgia Southwestern added their third run. Trailing by two, the Hurricanes eventually allowed the Spartans to tack on an insurance run in the top of the ninth to secure a 6-3 victory for UT. Despite being out-hit 10-9, the Spartans’ pitching and defense prevented the Hurricanes from turning those base runners into significant damage. B.J. Bailey remained undefeated on the season, throwing seven innings and allowing eight hits and three runs without surrendering a single walk.
Game Three
The rubber match of the series lived up to the hype, featuring a tense, low-scoring battle where all the action occurred in the first six innings. The Spartans broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third, but the Hurricanes answered immediately in the bottom of the fourth to knot the game at one. The decisive blow came in the sixth inning when Georgia Southwestern manufactured the winning run. For the second time in three days, the Hurricanes edged out the Spartans by a score of 2-1. Georgia Southwestern out-hit Tampa 11-6, handing the Spartans their first series loss of 2026. It was a definitive reminder of why the Hurricanes were considered the most formidable opponent on the schedule to date.
This series serves as a crucial learning experience for a Spartans team that struggled to find its offensive consistency for the first time this year. Following the road trip, UT returns home for a four-game set beginning on March 13th against the Davenport University Panthers, which includes a doubleheader on Saturday. The two losses in Georgia caused the Spartans to slip from the number one spot in the national rankings down to number three. They now look to bounce back against a Davenport squad that has struggled to a 6-10 start as the Panthers prepare to visit Tampa, Florida.
