SEATTLE, WA — The Seattle Torrent secured their first-ever franchise win on Wednesday night, defeating the New York Sirens 2-1 in a heart-stopping finish at Climate Pledge Arena. The victory was a dramatic, come-from-behind effort, as the Torrent rallied from a late 1-0 deficit with two goals in the final 90 seconds, one immediately following the other.
The game was a tight, defensive battle for over 55 minutes, with the Sirens taking an early lead just three minutes into the first period on an even-strength goal by Paetyn Levis. New York’s defense, anchored by strong play from goaltender Kayle Osborne, held that 1-0 lead for the majority of the contest.
The momentum of the game irrevocably shifted late in the third period when New York’s Kristýna Kaltounková was assessed a major checking-from-behind penalty and a game misconduct with four minutes remaining. The penalty, served by Savannah Norcross, left the Sirens exposed to Seattle’s power play unit.
The Torrent finally capitalized with just 1:24 remaining in the game. After the initial shot by Hannah Bilka was saved, a furious scramble ensued, and forward Alex Carpenter scored the equalizer against her former team, stunning the New York bench.
But Seattle was not done. Winning the ensuing faceoff and applying immediate pressure, the Torrent scored again just 22 seconds later. Star captain Hilary Knight tipped in a rebound from close range, giving Seattle the 2-1 lead with only one minute left on the clock. The two quick goals sent the home crowd into a frenzy, sealing the Torrent’s first victory in franchise history and improving their record to 1-1-0-1.
The loss was a devastating one for the Sirens, who had played a near-perfect game defensively until the major penalty. The Sirens will look to rebound on Saturday when they travel to face the Vancouver Goldeneyes.
