As the camp for the Boston College football team moves on, a decision has been made at the most important position on the offensive side of the ball. Head coach Bill O’Brien has decided on his quarterback for the season opener vs Fordman on August 30. Dyland Lonergran will get the start vs the Rams as he has beaten out Grayson James for the job.
Lonergan is a 6-2, 211-pound redshirt sophomore who has transferred in from Alabama. He spent two years with the Crimson Tide before making the move to BC. Last season, he appeared in two games; the year before that, in just one. He thought about being a dual sports athlete at Alabama, with baseball being the other sport. However, he never made it to the diamond for the Crimson Tide. With playing time a major issue at Alabama, Lonergan put himself into the portal and landed at Boston College. His coaching staff is hoping his talent level will make up for his lack of experience.
Grayson James is a red-shirt senior at BC. His big moment came on November 9 when he came off the Eagles bench and led the team to a come-from-behind victory over Syracuse. He would finish the season as the starting quarterback for Boston College. In all, he would start five games for BC, throwing for 1,202 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions. James first appeared in a spot start vs Western Kentucky back on September 28. He would throw for 168 yards on 19-of-32 passing with a touchdown and a rushing score. In the Bad Boy Mowers Bowl, James threw for a season high 301 yards (26-of-41). He would finish the season with three games of 200+ yards passing. James likes Lonergan’s transfer into the BC program. In James’ case, he came from Florida International, where he played in six games as a freshman. As a sophomore, he led the team in passing yards and passing touchdowns, while being named All-Conference USA Honorable Mention.
To have two capable QBs on your roster is a good problem to have if you are Coach O’Brien. How he handles this may well decide how this fall goes for Boston College.
