The University of Pittsburgh has a rich tradition of football that began in 1890. The Pitt Panthers are Nine-Time National Champions and many of the greatest players in the history of the game started their journey at Pitt.
Pitt boasts 99 First Team All-Americans, 25 members in the College Football Hall of Fame, and ten Panthers have been enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, with more to follow in the near future.
NGSC Sports provides you the ultimate Pitt GameDay Preview, where Panther fans turn to learn everything there is to know about Pitt and their upcoming opponent! Mike Drakulich (@PghSportsNation) brings you inside the huddle for both teams, including the Pittsburgh SportsNation Game Commentary, Game Prediction, Broadcast Information, and a complete breakdown of each team.
Heck, you’ll even know the weather at kickoff! The only thing you’re missing is a game uniform!
The Pittsburgh SportsNation Game Commentary
Normally when you hear the “The City Game” between the Pitt Panthers and Duquesne Dukes, you’re automatically thinking about the two inner city rivals meeting on the basketball court.
Not this time.
For the first time in 86 years, Pitt and Duquesne will face off on the gridiron against one another, this Saturday, August 30th, at Acrisure Stadium. Kickoff is set for Noon.
(By the way… both Jeff Capel (Pitt) and Dru Joyce III (Duquesne) need to do whatever it takes to get their teams playing again annually at PPG Paints Arena. There are zero excuses for this game not being played.)
Anyways, back to football…
The 2025 Panthers will be looking to avenge the 1939 team, who lost to the Dukes 21-13.
Pitt is 5-2 overall against Duquesne, with the first game dating back to 1901!
This time around, Pitt will be heavy favorites against a Duquesne team that may be used as a chew toy by the Panthers.
Pat Narduzzi will be entering his 11th season as Pitt’s head coach. Panther fans will be anxious to see how their team responds to last season’s immensely disappointing 7-6 record– one that witnessed Pitt opening up 7-0, only to drop six straight to end the 2024 year.
Can the Panthers finish what they originally started this time around? Much will depend on the arm of sophomore quarterback Eli Holstein, and a resurgent defense that plans on getting after the opposing quarterback, and making splash plays a regular occurrence.
Holstein is expected to be the general in Kade Bell’s up-tempo offense, and he’ll have plenty of weapons to throw to, including Kenny Johnson, who should be his top target in the passing game. Raphael “Poppi” Williams returns after catching 37 passes for 426 yards and six touchdowns. Cataurus “Blue” Hicks and Deuce Spann are transfers. Tony Kinsler, Bryce Yates, and Cam Sapp are a trio of electric freshmen.
“If you look at the two transfers we brought in, they can both run,” Bell said. “They can fly. … Tony Kinsler and Bryce Yates and Cam Sapp, they can run.”
Bell will be relying on his offense to produce plenty of explosive plays in 2025.
“And the way to create explosive plays is you’ve got to be able to either stretch someone vertically and catch a ball down the field or your guys can go catch and run with it,” Bell said.
“You want guys that can create those big plays. So, to me, I’m excited about this group because I think we have more speed. I think we have a way to kind of scare more people if you give us some space. We got some guys that can take it to the house.”
Then you have a solid tight end room led by Jake Overman.
“I think when you catch a ball and you get up field and you get vertical — when you get those, what we call ‘dirty’ extra yards, I think that really sets a tone,” said Overman.
Desmond Reid returns as the starter at running back, and he’s ready to improve on the impressive numbers he put up in his first season at Pitt.
“I mean, you got number zero,” Narduzzi said.
Reid, that very same “number zero”, rushed for 962 yards with five touchdowns, while adding 52 receptions for 579 yards and another four touchdowns.
Juelz Goff will be Reid’s back-up, and he’s ready to prove he has what it takes to be the man when his number is called.
“I feel like it’s night and day from a year ago,” Goff said. “A year ago, I would know what I was doing in the meetings, and then just get out there, make a freshman mistake. This year, I’m just more comfortable. Just understand the offense, understand the concept, so it’s allowed me to play faster.”
Depth is a little thin after the top two, but transfer Jalynn Williams, from Western Carolina, provides a big back that Narduzzi likes, if he ever has to rely on him.
“He’s a really good back,” Narduzzi said of Williams. “We kind of wanted the Derrick Davis, the Daniel Carter big back type of guy, so he’s a big tailback. If you put on some tape of him, this guy can make you miss, he changes directions well, he can catch the ball out of the backfield, which you guys know we like to throw to our backs out of the backfield. This guy can do it all.”
The Pitt defense will be led by linebacker Kyle Louis, who is on just about every preseason defensive award watchlist, including The Butkus Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Walter Camp Player of the Year, Chuck Bednarik Award, and Lombardi Award. Louis had 101 tackles, seven sacks, and four interceptions in 2024.
“He’s got great instincts,” Narduzzi said of Louis. “Every linebacker you ever look at, you’ve got to talk about instincts first. You can be elite athletically like he is — he’s athletic, he can run, he can hit, he can tackle, he’s a playmaker. He’s going to make the play.
“He’s got that heart and desire to go get the football because there’s only one football at a time on the field. He finds the football, but it comes down to his instincts. He’s got linebacker instincts to play at the next level and be a first-rounder.”
Louis will be joined by fellow linebackers Rasheem Biles and Braylan Lovelace, in terrorizing opposing offenses.
The Sharks, as they call themselves, will be eager to feed.
“With me and Kyle returning, we’ve got Braylan returning — it’s going to be an exciting season, definitely,” Biles said. “We got older, more mature, more comfortable with the game — everything’s going to flow a lot more. We’re definitely going to have the Sharks on a whole different level this year. We can be the X-factors of the defense.”
Get used to the name Cruce Brookins being called over and over as well. The strong safety from Steel Valley will become a household name by the end of this season.
“Cruce is a ballhawk,” Narduzzi said. “The great thing about Cruce is, other guys get opportunities, but when Cruce gets his opportunity, he catches it. … Cruce catches the ball and makes plays with it. That’s what’s exciting about him, so we’ve got to get everybody else to the same level as Cruce is.”
Though Duquesne looks thoroughly outmatched, Narduzzi expects to see plenty of fight from Jerry Schmitt and his Dukes, who are back-to-back Northeast Conference Champions.
“They will play their best game, they will be cranked up that they get to go play in that stadium, whether they played there in high school for a WPIAL championship or this is their championship game,” Narduzzi said. “It’s their opportunity to go out, show who they are and, no doubt, prove some people wrong.”
Tyler Riddell, and transfer from Gardner-Webb via East Tennessee State, will be Duquesne’s starting quarterback. Last season he threw for 2,573 yards and 16 touchdowns, with 11 interceptions. He’s not much of a runner as evidenced by his -28 rushing yards.
Riddell’s main receiver is Joey Isabella, who caught 41 passes for 741 yards and 11 touchdowns last year.
Jermaine Johnson and B.J. Alexander are the other listed starters at wide receiver. Johnson had 17 receptions for 188 yards and three touchdowns, while Alexander, a transfer from Florida Atlantic, was injured the entire 2024 season.
Noah Canty is the lone tight end on the roster who had any stats from 2024, that being one catch for four yards, which happened to be a touchdown.
The Dukes will rely on a pair of running backs to lead their rushing attack.
Taj Butts rushed for 268 yards last year, with no rushing touchdowns, and caught five passes for 32 yards, while Shawn Solomon, Jr. rushed for 263 yards and two touchdowns.
The Dukes return six defensive starters from last year, including defensive lineman Jack Dunkley, who was named
to the 2025 Buck Buchanan Award Preseason Watch List. Dunkley had 12.5 tackles for a loss and 9.5 sacks in 2024.
Safety Antonio Epps led the team with 55 tackles last year, and had one interception.
“Duquesne’s got a really good football team,” Narduzzi said. “Well-coached. Obviously, Pittsburgh tough with a bunch of Pittsburgh guys. Those guys will come into Acrisure Stadium cranked up and wanting to play their best game of the year, without a doubt. We expect that.
“I got a ton of respect for Jerry Schmitt. It’s good for them, good for us, a short trip for them, so we’re excited.”
While Narduzzi obviously respects Schmitt and his team, in all reality, this one should be over by halftime, if not sooner, IF Pitt is going to be the team they expect to be in 2025.
Boston College buried the Dukes 56-0 last year, WVU drubbed them 56-17 in 2023, and Florida State carved them up 47-7 in 2022.
That’s being outscored 159-24 against Power 4 teams.
Expect a big day from the Pitt offense as Holstein should put up some nice numbers and spread the wealth around to his weapons, and Reid should pick up where he left off in being a dual threat.
It will be fun to see what contributions that the new transfers and freshmen can make in their debuts as Panthers.
Pitt’s defense, behind those Sharks, should have Riddell running for his life and keep the Dukes from being much of an offensive threat as long as the first team is in the game.
