The long-awaited and much-anticipated pairing is official. Aaron Rodgers, 41, has signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The contract details are unknown at the moment.
The four-time MVP and Super Bowl champion was released by the New York Jets on March 12th, the first day of the 2025 NFL season.

Rodgers met with the Steelers on March 21st, which many expected would result in an official pairing. Now, over two months later, Rodgers is officially a Pittsburgh Steeler, ending the saga and drawn-out decision.
“I’m open to anything and attached to nothing. Retirement could still be a possibility, but right now my focus has been — and will continue to be — on my personal life,” Rodgers said on April 17th on the Pat McAfee Show. “And that’s what I’ve told the coaches. There are still conversations that are being had. It’s all been very honest lines of communication.”
Rodgers returned to play last season after missing all but one series in 2023 with a torn Achilles. The Jets went a disappointing 5-12 and finished 24th out of 32 NFL teams in offense. The gunslinger threw for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns to go along with 11 interceptions, a far cry from his 2021 MVP season in which he threw for 4115 yards and 37 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions.
Still, the Steelers plan to have the veteran lead their offense in his 21st NFL season and anchor the quarterback position that has been a revolving door since franchise icon Ben Roethlisberger retired after the 2021 season.
The offense in Pittsburgh will look much different from last season. Former Alabama star RB Najee Harris, along with veteran WR Mike Williams, left for the Chargers in free agency, and WR George Pickens was traded to the Dallas Cowboys. RB Jaylen Warren will now receive the bulk of the carries in the backfield, and veteran receiver Robert Woods will slot in at WR2/3. The big splash the Steelers made was trading for WR DK Metcalf with the Seattle Seahawks.
Metcalf, 27, is a two-time Pro Bowler who last season had 66 receptions for 992 yards and 5 touchdowns in 15 games. He signed a 4-year, $132 million contract extension with the Steelers following the trade. Rodgers and Metcalf will now form a new duo in Pittsburgh.
The Steelers’ quarterback room now consists of Aaron Rodgers, Skylar Thompson, veteran Mason Rudolph, and sixth-round pick Will Howard. Rodgers will fly to Pittsburgh Friday to make his signing official, and he will report to mandatory training camp next week.

With this signing, Rodgers is expected to be the starting quarterback come Week 1 for Pittsburgh. This will create a highly anticipated rematch in New York vs his most recent team.
The Jets and Steelers have now swapped starting quarterbacks from the beginning of last season, with Rodgers going to Pittsburgh and Justin Fields going to New York in free agency on a two-year, $40 million deal.
The Steelers have lost five straight playoff games and have not won a game on the biggest stage since January 15th, 2017, which is the longest playoff win drought in franchise history. Rodgers also has had his playoff struggles, not winning a playoff game since January 2021. Pittsburgh hopes the pairing can overcome these playoff failures come January of 2026.
