A rough one for Spinners as they lose 15-2 to Vermont

The Lowell Spinners have at times made the game of baseball a little more difficult than it needs to be. On Wednesday night it was a painful reminder of what can happen when the game is played that way.

Last night it was the Spinners doing the damage, tonight it was the Lake Monsters. They banged out 14 hits, smacked three home runs, and RF Anthony Churlin had a 4-6 night and four RBI. He was a double away from hitting for the cycle as the Lake Monsters take game two of this series 15-2 over Lowell.

As Spinners Manager Iggy Suarez would say after the contest, the game got away from his team in the first inning. Vermont would plate four runs against Lowell starter Yorvan Pantoja still seeking his first win of the season. He is now 0-7 with a 6.23 ERA.

The runs Vermont scored in the first were because of plays not made by the Spinners infield as opposed to the Lake Monsters roping the baseball all over the lot. Two potential double play ground ballS were not turned by the infield and it led to more pitches being thrown by Pantoja and extra outs for the visitors.

The first of Churlin’s four hits was the big blow in the first, a double to right that hit the base of the wall to drive in two runs. His next time at bat in the third he homered to left off the scoreboard, his third of the season and two more RBI. It was 6-1 Vermont.

The Lake Monsters second HR of the night came off the bat of Aaron Arruda, a three run blast to left that cleared everything, his fourth of the year. It came off of Taylor Ahearn who came on for Pantoja in the third and that made the score 9-1 Vermont.

The Lake Monsters added four more runs in the seventh, then finished off the night with two more in the ninth when Jesus Lage belted his first home run of the season to left off of position player Steven Reveles who was asked to save the bullpen. For Lage, it was part of a two hit four RBI night. He also played a strong game at SS for the Lake Monsters.

Not to be forgotten, the Vermont pitching was good. Starting pitcher, Jesus Luzardo, who did not figure in the decision went four efficient innings. He was picked up by Wyatt Marks who did get the win (3-0) by going three innings and giving up only three hits and one run.

The lone bright spot for the Spinners came off the bat of Raiwinson Lameda who had a three hit night and drove in both Spinners runs.

Suarez said after the game that he and the coaching staff paid attention to how the team handled the game. He called it a learning experience for them and also said he liked the makeup of the group to be able to put this one behind them and focus on Thursday night.

We will see if he is right with first pitch Thursday at 6:30 pm.
