The Clearwater Threshers and Jupiter Hammerheads opened an important series Tuesday night. The matchup featured the Florida State League’s top two first-half teams. It also marked their first meeting of the 2026 season. These clubs share recent postseason history. Jupiter defeated Clearwater in the 2023 Florida State League Championship Series. The Hammerheads won that title in three games. Both teams appear on another collision course this season. Each club finished with the best record in its division. Clearwater actually owned a better first-half record than Jupiter. The Threshers reached 40 wins before June 18.
Clearwater took the field wearing baby blue jerseys, red-striped pants, and red caps. Meanwhile, Jupiter wore aqua green tops, gray pants, and black hats. The Hammerheads serve as the Low-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins. The Threshers struck first in the opening inning. Second baseman Matthew Ferrara drew a walk. Right fielder Jonathan Hogart followed with another free pass. Catcher Will Verling then delivered a single. His hit produced Clearwater’s first run and first hit of the game. Jupiter threatened early but could not capitalize. The Hammerheads placed runners in scoring position twice during the first three innings. However, Clearwater’s pitching and defense prevented any damage.
The Threshers extended their lead in the third inning. Shortstop Juan Villavicencio lined an RBI single. The hit pushed Clearwater ahead 2-0. The run came after Jupiter struggled with several baserunning mistakes. Starting pitcher Cade Obermueller continued to control the game. The left-hander encountered serious trouble during the fourth inning. Jupiter loaded the bases after collecting three consecutive hits. Nevertheless, Obermueller responded with three straight strikeouts. His impressive escape preserved Clearwater’s 2-0 advantage. The Threshers gained more momentum in the bottom half of the inning. Hogart launched a solo home run to right field. The blast increased Clearwater’s led to 3-0.

Clearwater added another run during the sixth inning. Hogart singled and later advanced after a throwing error. He then stole third base. First baseman Lyle Miller-Green followed with an RBI single. Consequently, the Threshers moved ahead 4-0. The home team continued to build its cushion in the seventh inning. Designated hitter Alirio Ferrebus crushed a solo home run. His long ball gave Clearwater a commanding 5-0 lead. For seven innings, the Threshers appeared firmly in control. However, Jupiter’s offense finally came alive in the eighth inning.
Right fielder Luis Cova worked a walk and reached base. Catcher Victor Ortega then doubled to drive him home. The RBI double cut the deficit to 5-1. Soon afterward, the inning completely changed the game. Clearwater reliever Tyler Bowen struggled with his command. Jupiter took advantage and produced several key hits. The Hammerheads suddenly scored four runs in the inning. As a result, Clearwater’s lead disappeared. The biggest blow came from first baseman Edgardo De Leon. He launched a two-run home run that gave Jupiter its first lead of the night. The dramatic homer pushed the Hammerheads ahead 6-5.
Jupiter scored all six of its runs during the eighth inning. The explosive frame erased a five-run deficit and stunned the Clearwater crowd. The Threshers could not answer in the bottom of the eighth or ninth innings. Therefore, Jupiter completed one of its most impressive comebacks of the season. When the final out arrived, the Hammerheads secured a 6-5 victory. Jupiter finished with six runs on 13 hits and two errors. Clearwater recorded five runs on nine hits and one error. Although Clearwater controlled most of the contest, Jupiter showed why it owns one of the league’s best records. The Hammerheads never stopped attacking and eventually seized the momentum.
Meanwhile, the Threshers received strong performances from Obermueller, Hogart, and Ferrebus. However, a difficult eighth inning proved costly. If these teams meet again in the Florida State League Championship Series, fans could witness another memorable battle. Tuesday’s game certainly provided a preview of what could await later this season.
