The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) kicked off its highly anticipated home World Cup campaign in unforgettable fashion Friday, cruising to a historic 4–1 victory over Paraguay in front of a star-studded, sold-out crowd of 70,492 fans at SoFi Stadium.
The triumph marks the first time in USMNT history that the team has scored four goals in a single World Cup match, shattering their previous tournament high and instantly igniting World Cup fever across the nation.
First Half: The Balogun & Pulisic Show
Under the bright lights of Los Angeles, Mauricio Pochettino’s side wasted no time establishing dominance. The Americans pressed high and broke the deadlock in just the 7th minute. Captain Christian Pulisic carved open the Paraguayan defense and fed Weston McKennie, whose subsequent cross deflected off Paraguay midfielder Damián Bobadilla for an early own goal.
From there, Monaco striker Folarin Balogun took complete control of the final third:
- 31st Minute: Pulisic sliced through the backline again, slipping a perfect pass to Balogun, who clinically slotted it past goalkeeper Orlando Gill.
- 45+4 Minute: Deep into first-half stoppage time, Balogun received a pass from Malik Tillman on the edge of the area, danced past two defenders, and curled a world-class strike into the top-left corner.
The spectacular finish sent the U.S. into the locker room with an unprecedented 3–0 advantage—the largest halftime lead the United States has ever held in a World Cup match.
Managing the Second Half
The lone blemish of the evening came at halftime when Pulisic was substituted off for Sebastian Berhalter as a precaution after taking a minor knock. Pulisic later eased fan anxieties, stating, “Staying positive. I don’t think it’s anything.”
Paraguay adapted well in the second half, utilizing their physicality and creating opportunities through Brighton star Julio Enciso. In the 72nd minute, Enciso pounced on a loose ball and assisted second-half substitute Maurício, who beat Matt Freese with a low shot to bring the score to 3–1.
Freese, who earned a surprise start in goal ahead of veteran Matt Turner, held firm through the remaining Paraguayan waves of pressure.
Reyna Seals the Rout
As Paraguay pushed numbers forward late, the U.S. capitalised on a swift counterattack in the 97th minute. Giovanni Reyna, subbed on in the 81st minute, collected the ball at pace and used a brilliant outside-of-the-boot finish to smash home the fourth and final goal of the evening, putting a cinematic punctuation mark on a flawless opening night.
What’s Next in Group D
With the three points secured, the United States sits comfortably at the top of Group D. They will travel north to Seattle for their second group-stage match against Australia on Friday, June 19, while Paraguay searches for answers ahead of their clash with Turkey.
