Friday night’s four-game WNBA slate last night delivered a thrilling mix of vintage superstar performances, rookie history, and absolute perimeter clinics. While the road teams generaled the evening—taking three out of the four matchups—the headlines belonged to individual and historic milestones.
Here is everything that went down on a jam-packed Friday night across the league.
Clutch Wheeler, Historic Ogwumike Lift Sparks Past Mystics (92–87)
Even with the league’s leading scorer, Kelsey Plum, sidelined due to an illness and ankle injury, the Los Angeles Sparks (4-3) showed incredible resilience to outlast the Washington Mystics (3-4) in a 92–87 thriller at CareFirst Arena.
The night belonged to veteran Nneka Ogwumike, who firmly cemented her status in WNBA lore. Ogwumike put up 20 points and 11 rebounds, and with those 20 points, she passed Tamika Catchings to become the 5th all-time leading scorer in the league’s history.
While rookie Cameron Brink set the tone early with a blistering 14-point first half (finishing with 16), it was Erica Wheeler who slammed the door. Wheeler scored eight of her 21 points in the final 70 seconds, answering a late Washington rally to seal the victory. Dearica Hamby filled the stat sheet beautifully with 14 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, and 4 steals.
Shakira Austin was an absolute force down low, dropping 25 points and 10 rebounds. Sonia Citron exploded for 15 of her 21 points in the second half alongside 8 assists, but Washington couldn’t recover from a brutal 12-point second quarter.
Coffey Rains Threes as Lynx Smother Sky (79–58)
The Minnesota Lynx (6-2) extended their perfect road record to 4-0 this season with a commanding 79–58 blowout of the Chicago Sky (3-5) at Wintrust Arena.
The story of the game was Nia Coffey, who turned in her best scoring night in eight years. Coffey was 6-of-9 from beyond the arc, finishing with 20 points and 8 rebounds. Minnesota blew a tight halftime game wide open in the third quarter with a devastating 12–0 run, outscoring Chicago 31–16 in the frame.
Complementing Coffey’s outside shooting was rookie sensation Olivia Miles, who plays with wisdom beyond her years to log 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. Natasha Howard chipped in 14 points to anchor the interior.
Chicago remains completely winless at home this season (0-4). Kamilla Cardoso fought hard for a 12-point, 13-rebound double-double, and Skylar Diggins added 12 points, but the Sky shot a miserable 28.6% from the field and a staggering 16.7% from three-point range.
Rookie Pauline Astier Propels Liberty Past Mercury (75–68)
In front of a raucous sellout crowd of 17,579 at Barclays Center, the New York Liberty (5-4) squeezed out a hard-fought 75–68 victory over the Phoenix Mercury (2-7), fueled by a historic rookie performance.
French rookie guard Pauline Astier put on an absolutely clinical performance, leading the Liberty with 16 points, 6 assists, and a career-high 6 rebounds while shooting a highly efficient 6-for-8 (75%) from the floor.
With her stat line, Astier became just the third rookie in WNBA history to record at least 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists while shooting 75% or better with two or fewer turnovers. The previous two rookies to achieve this feat both went on to win WNBA Rookie of the Year.
Astier also crossed her 100th career WNBA point in fewer than 10 games. Betnijah Laney-Hamilton provided excellent veteran punch off the bench with 13 points, and Han Xu grabbed season highs of 9 points and 6 boards to help fend off Phoenix’s late-game surges.
Angel Reese and Dream Turn Up the Heat on Expansion Fire (86–66)
In the Friday nightcap at the Moda Center, the Atlanta Dream showcased their terrifying defensive identity, overwhelming the expansion Portland Fire 86–66.
Angel Reese was dominant from the opening tip, bullying the Fire inside to rack up 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 assists. Atlanta’s defensive perimeter traps completely paralyzed the young Portland squad, forcing a staggering 28 turnovers. Rhyne Howard was everywhere on defense, logging 14 points and a spectacular 6 steals, while Naz Hillmon matched her defensive energy with 14 points and 5 steals of her own.
Portland struggled heavily against the Dream’s length. Though Sarah Ashlee Barker (14 points) and Carla Leite (11 points) managed to find double digits, the Fire could not protect the basketball, surrendering 33 points off turnovers to an elite Atlanta transition offense.
