An Early-Season Reality Check at Barclays
The 2026 New York Liberty were built for one thing and one thing only: a WNBA Championship. After aggressive offseason roster construction designed to assemble an unstoppable juggernaut, the expectations in Brooklyn were sky-high. Yet, on Monday night at the Barclays Center, those lofty ambitions hit a glaring, expansion-sized speed bump.
The Portland Fire, a first-year franchise still introducing its roster to the league, walked into New York and handed the Liberty a definitive 81–74 upset. With the loss, New York slides to a disappointing 3–4 record on the young season. While it is still May, a sub-.500 start for a team with this much payroll and star power is an undeniable letdown for the fans and the front office alike.
The Game Breakdown: Stewart’s Solitary Fight
To be entirely fair to New York, the basketball gods did them no favors ahead of tip-off. The Liberty took the floor looking less like a super-team and more like an emergency ward, missing an entire All-Star perimeter rotation.
Sabrina Ionescu was sidelined for rest, Satou Sabally sat out due to illness, and Betnijah Laney-Hamilton was missing for personal reasons.
