England’s Aaron Rai captured the 2026 PGA Championship after a brilliant final round at Aronimink. Rai closed with a stunning 65 and finished at nine under par. His victory ended England’s 107-year wait for another PGA champion. He also became the first European winner since Rory McIlroy won the event in 2014.
Alex Smalley and Matti Schmid also remained in contention late Sunday. Smalley rebounded from several mistakes and finished tied for second. Schmid showed impressive composure despite limited major championship experience. He eventually tied for fourth after a closing 69. Both players earned respect with steady performances under intense pressure. Justin Thomas posted one of the day’s best rounds earlier Sunday. Thomas fired a 65 and set the clubhouse lead at five under. For several hours, his score appeared capable of forcing a playoff. Yet Rai’s spectacular finish eventually moved beyond Thomas’s reach.
Rory McIlroy entered the final round hoping to continue his outstanding season. McIlroy had already won the Masters earlier this year. A PGA Championship victory would have kept his calendar Grand Slam hopes alive. However, several missed opportunities hurt his momentum throughout the afternoon.
McIlroy struggled to convert birdie chances on key holes. He settled for pars after strong drives and solid approaches. Frustration became visible during the back nine. At one point, McIlroy reacted angrily toward disruptive fans near the 16th hole. He eventually signed for a 69 and finished tied for seventh at four under.
Defending champion Scottie Scheffler never seriously threatened the lead Sunday. Scheffler admitted afterward that his putting disappointed him all week. He closed with a 69 and finished at two under overall. His inconsistent play prevented another major championship run.
Other notable performances came from Cameron Smith, Xander Schauffele, and Ludvig Åberg. Smith battled through erratic driving to finish at four under. Schauffele recovered late but never fully entered contention. Åberg showed flashes of brilliance yet struggled with his putting throughout the week.
Veteran Padraig Harrington also entertained fans during the final round. Harrington holed out from a bunker for an eagle at the 16th hole. The 54-year-old finished the tournament under par after shooting 69 on Sunday.
When the tournament ended, Rai received the Wanamaker Trophy during an emotional ceremony. He described the victory as surreal after a frustrating season. Rai praised golf for teaching humility, discipline, and perseverance. He also praised the players representing the PGA Tour and the PGA of America.
Rai’s triumph represented more than a personal breakthrough. His victory snapped a decade-long run of American winners at the PGA Championship. It also placed his name beside legendary English golfer Jim Barnes. Barnes previously stood alone as England’s only PGA champion after victories in 1916 and 1919.
The final round delivered everything expected from a major championship on Sunday. There was pressure, drama, momentum swings, and unforgettable moments. In the end, Aaron Rai produced one of the greatest closing rounds in PGA Championship history.
