The wait is finally over for Ryan Garcia. On Saturday night at a sold-out T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the 27-year-old superstar delivered the most disciplined and dominant performance of his career, dethroning Mario Barrios via a lopsided unanimous decision to capture the WBC Welterweight Championship.
After years of “interim” tags and outside-the-ring headlines, Garcia (25–2, 20 KOs) can officially call himself a full world champion. The judges’ scorecards reflected a total “masterclass,” reading 120–107, 119–108, and 118–109.
30 Seconds to Mastery
The fight began with a shock to the system. Known primarily for his lightning-fast left hook, Garcia surprised Barrios by leading with a devastating overhand right. Less than 30 seconds into the first round, that right hand found its mark, sending Barrios to the canvas and setting a tone of dominance that never wavered.
- The Right Hand Game Plan: Garcia later revealed he spent his entire camp focusing on his right hand, anticipating that Barrios would prepare solely for the left hook. The strategy worked perfectly, as Barrios struggled to adjust to Garcia’s newfound two-handed attack.
- Injury Adversity: Despite his control, Garcia faced a scare in the ninth round when he appeared to injure his right hand. He spent the championship rounds fighting largely one-handed, relying on his elite footwork and a stiff jab to keep the champion at bay.
- The Clinical Approach: Unlike past performances where Garcia might have fought recklessly for a knockout, he remained patient and “explosive yet intelligent,” according to Barrios, who admitted after the fight that he was “caught by a punch I didn’t see.”
A Career-Defining Vindication
For Garcia, the win serves as massive vindication following a turbulent two-year stretch marked by a suspension, legal battles, and a disappointing loss to Rolando Romero. By returning to his roots with his father, Henry Garcia, in his corner, “King Ry” appeared to have made a “360-degree turn” in his professional dedication.
“It feels good to finally be a world champion,” Garcia said in the ring. “It’s something I’ve been dreaming of since I was 7 years old. I believe this was a masterclass.”

What’s Next: The Super-Fight Callout
Garcia wasted no time looking toward the future. Immediately after being draped with the WBC green belt, he turned his attention to the front row and called out Shakur Stevenson for an “all-American super-fight.” With his new hardware and a massive performance in the bank, Garcia has re-established himself as one of the most powerful players in the sport’s most lucrative division.
