The pursuit of redemption officially began on Thursday, February 5, 2026, as the U.S. Women’s Olympic Hockey Team dismantled Czechia 5–1 to open Group A play at the Milano Rho Ice Hockey Arena. Even before Friday’s Opening Ceremony officially ignites the 2026 Winter Games, the Americans sent a clear message to the field: they are here to reclaim the gold.
Scamurra and Knight Shine
The U.S. attack was characterized by relentless depth and veteran poise.
- Hayley Scamurra: The “jack-of-all-trades” forward was the star of the morning, netting two goals despite playing limited minutes. Her energy provided a spark whenever the Czechs threatened to slow the game down
- Hilary Knight: Competing in her record-setting fifth Olympics, the 36-year-old captain proved she hasn’t lost a step. Knight scored her 13th career Olympic goal late in the second period, a highlight-reel effort where she powered past a defender to rip a shot into the top corner.
- Laila Edwards: The 21-year-old made history as the first Black woman to compete for the U.S. Olympic hockey team, contributing a crucial assist on the opening goal.
Game Flow: Breaking the Wall
Czech goaltender Klára Peslarová was heroic early, making 37 saves, but the sheer volume of the American assault (42 shots) eventually broke through.
- First Period: Alex Carpenter opened the scoring at 15:55, tipping home a Megan Keller shot on the power play.
- Second Period: The U.S. blew the game open with two goals in 83 seconds from Joy Dunne (her first Olympic goal) and Scamurra. Czechia’s Barbora Jurickova managed a breakaway goal to cut the lead to 3–1, but Knight’s late-period strike restored the three-goal cushion.
- Third Period: Scamurra added her second of the night at 4:22, icing the 5–1 final.
