Mike Drakulich, the man behind Pittsburgh SportsNation (@PghSportsNation), who covers both Pitt football and the Steelers for NGSC Sports, brings you inside the huddle with The Pittsburgh SportsNation Game Commentary, Game Prediction, Game Day Information, Broadcast Information, and complete breakdown of each team, complete with stats. Heck, you’ll even know the weather at kickoff!
The Pittsburgh SportsNation Game Commentary
Around 7:30 PM on Sunday, November 30th, it looked as if the 2025 season was pronounced dead for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Coming off a listless 26-7 beating at the hands of the Buffalo Bills, the team was 6-6, and tied with the Baltimore Ravens for 1st place in the AFC North.
Weeks before, Pittsburgh was 4-1, and the Ravens were 1-5, so for the two teams to be tied, and heading into a week 14 match-up against each other at M&T Bank Stadium, it certainly appeared as the two rivals were headed in opposite directions.
Not so fast, my friend.
After a hot start to the game, the Steelers held off the Ravens to achieve a crucial 27-22 victory on the road.
Pittsburgh would go on to win the next two games, clobbering Miami 28-15, and shocking Detroit 29-24 at Ford Field last week.
Suddenly, the Steelers are 9-6, and both the offense behind Aaron Rodgers, and a resurgent defense, are all peaking at the right time of year.
The Ravens haven’t been as fortunate. After the loss to Pittsburgh, they did manage a 24-0 win vs Cincinnati, but were on the losing end of a tight 28-24 affair against New England last week.
So, with two weeks left in the season, Pittsburgh has a two game advantage over Baltimore.
If Baltimore, who will likely be without Lamar Jackson, loses on Saturday night at Green Bay, Pittsburgh will win the AFC North. If the Ravens do pull off the upset, all Pittsburgh has to do is take down the Cleveland Browns (3-12) this Sunday at 1:00 PM, at Huntington Bank Field, and they win the AFC North.
I’m sure the Steelers would love to see the Packers take care of their rivals, which would render this upcoming game as meaningless. The nightmare scenario would be the Ravens beating Green Bay and the Steelers losing to the Browns, which would set up a Week 18 winner-take-all match-up between the Steelers and Ravens in Pittsburgh.
Let’s not even go there.
So, for the time being, we have no idea if this Sunday’s game vs the Browns will count for anything until late Saturday night.
For now, the Steelers are preparing as if this Sunday is a must win.
“It’s been playoff-type football for us the last three weeks,” quarterback Aaron Rodgers said. “We had to win to take the lead in the division. We had to win to shut down a team that had won four in a row and was hot, shut down their playoff hopes. And we had to win against a team with a lot of pride that has played in an NFC championship game in the last couple years.
“So, it says a lot about the guys we got. Says a lot about the leadership, the organization and the players.”
Now the Steelers are on the verge of winning their division and hosting a playoff game in three weeks.
When the Steelers have the ball: Aaron Rodgers has passed for 2,860 yards, 23 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He’s been sacked 25 times. Playing his best football of the season.
D.K. Metcalf is the Steelers top receiver, pulling down 59 receptions for 850 yards and six touchdowns, but he’s suspended for the last two games of the regular season. Calvin Austin III has 28 catches for 317 yards and two touchdowns, but he’s out with a hamstring injury. Roman Wilson, who now has a chance to see some action with both Metcalf and Austin out, has 12 receptions for 166 yards and two scores. Scotty Miller and Ben Skowronek seem to make plays when their number is called. Marquez Valdes-Scantling was signed to the practice squad a few weeks ago and caught his first pass for a touchdown against Miami. Adam Thielen has six receptions for 60 yards.
It’s the Pittsburgh tight ends that get the most action when Rodgers drops back to pass. Jonnu Smith has 32 catches for 202 yards and two touchdowns, but also has 59 yards rushing and a touchdown. Darnell Washington excels at helping in the run game with his blocking, but has become a danger catching the ball, as he has 29 receptions for 349 yards a touchdown. Not many corners want to see that guy running at full speed at them when he has the ball. Pat Freiermuth has been excellent the past few games, and has 35 receptions for 372 yards and four touchdowns.
Jaylen Warren continues to be a dual threat at running back, rushing for 828 yards and six touchdowns, adding 35 receptions for 300 yards and two touchdowns. Kenneth Gainwell splits time with Warren, and is 2nd on the team with 501 yards, and has found the end zone four times. Gainwell is 1st on the team with 62 receptions for 410 yards and three touchdowns. Rookie Kaleb Johnson has yet to be utilized by Tomlin, gaining just 69 yards so far. Conner Heyward has been the guy under center when in the “Steel City Shove”, and has one rushing touchdown.
When the Browns have the ball: Shedeur Sanders has taken over at quarterback, and he’s thrown for 1,103 yards, six touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He’s been sacked 15 times, and rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown.
Rookie Quinshon Judkins was having an excellent year before suffering a season ending injury last week. Dylan Sampson is likely to assume the starters role, and he’s rushed for 116 yards. Raheim Sanders will see time as well.
Jerry Jeudy is the Browns best receiver, catching 43 passes for 531 yards and two touchdowns. Isaiah Bond has 16 receptions for 309 yards. Cedric Tillman has 19 catches for 205 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Jamari Thrash is barely used. Malachi Corley has eight receptions for 55 yards, but also has 109 yards on the ground.
Tight end Harold Fannin, Jr. is the best weapon the Browns have, as he leads the team with 70 receptions for 701 yards and five touchdowns. David Njoku has fallen off after a decent start, and he has caught 33 passes for 293 yards and four touchdowns.
The Steelers path to victory: Win the trenches. With the weather expected to suck, that being rainy and windy, the more physical team will head home with the win this Sunday afternoon.
Plenty depends on the result of Sunday night’s game between the Packers and Ravens. If the Ravens lose, the Steelers would be foolish to play their starters, as they would be AFC North champions and pretty much have two weeks off before prepping for a home playoff game at Acrisure Stadium in January.
If the Ravens do win, then everyone is a go and playing to win this game.
There isn’t a type of weather that Aaron Rodgers hasn’t played in, so you won’t have to worry about him elevating his play. The biggest question will be which of the receivers in Roman Wilson, Marquez-Valdez Scantling, Adam Thielen, Scotty Miller, and Ben Skowronek will step up with both D.K. Metcalf and Calvin Austin III out for Pittsburgh.
With the way the Steelers have been running the ball of late, you can’t help but love the combo of Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell chewing up the Browns defense. Perhaps we’ll get to see a game featuring just Kaleb Johnson.
Maybe it will be Mason Rudolph at quarterback– or, gasp… Will Howard.
Whomever is playing on offense, the focus will be keeping Brown’s defensive end Myles Garrett away from their quarterbacks. One sack by Garrett and he breaks the single season sack record held by T.J. Watt and Michael Strahan.
The Steelers defense will be coming after Cleveland quarterback Shedeur Sanders, hoping to pressure him into a few turnovers. The Browns run game won’t be as good without Quinshon Judkins out. Tight end Harold Fannin, Jr. is Cleveland’s best weapon, but he is listed as questionable to play, and fellow TE David Njoku is already out.
Game Prediction: Two scenarios here…
1. Pittsburgh plays their starters: Steelers 27 Browns 10
2. Pittsburgh rests their starters: Steelers 17 Browns 13
