As the calendar turns toward January, the landscape of men’s college basketball has reached a fever pitch. The non-conference slate has separated the pretenders from the contenders, leaving a handful of unbeatens at the top and a chaotic middle class jockeying for position before the grind of league play fully takes over. This year, it’s Arizona and Michigan fighting for the top spot.

The Storylines Shaping the Polls
1. The Battle for No. 1: Arizona vs. Michigan
Tommy Lloyd’s Arizona Wildcats have held the top spot for three consecutive weeks, but Dusty May’s Michigan Wolverines are breathing down their neck. Arizona’s resume is bolstered by five wins over ranked opponents, including UConn and Alabama. Meanwhile, Michigan is a statistical darling, scoring 100+ points in five of its last six games. The gap in total points between the two is now just 20 points.
2. The Surprise Unbeatens
While Arizona and Michigan were expected to be good, Vanderbilt (11) and Nebraska (13) are the Cinderella stories of the first half. Both remain undefeated at 12-0. Nebraska has reached its highest ranking since 1992, while Vanderbilt’s high-octane offense (94 PPG) has turned the SEC on its head.
3. The “Dybantsa” Effect
At BYU, freshman AJ Dybantsa is making a case for National Player of the Year. He recently became the youngest player in NCAA history to record a 30-point triple-double. Under his leadership, the Cougars have firmly established themselves as a top-10 mainstay and a legitimate threat to win the Big 12.
4. Falling Giants
Duke suffered its first blemish of the season in an 82-81 thriller against Texas Tech (15), causing them to slide out of the top five for the first time this year. Similarly, Louisville (16) saw the biggest drop of the week, falling five spots after a stumble against Tennessee.
Conference Dominance
The Big 12 continues to be the deepest league in the country, placing six teams in the Top 25 (Arizona, Iowa State, BYU, Texas Tech, Kansas, and Houston). However, the Big Ten is arguably more top-heavy, with Michigan, Purdue, Michigan State, Nebraska, Illinois, and Iowa all currently ranked.
Stat of the Week
7: The number of undefeated teams remaining in Division I men’s basketball as of Christmas Day. (Arizona, Michigan, Iowa State, Vanderbilt, Nebraska, Miami-OH, and Ole Miss).
