Heck, you’ll even know the weather at kickoff!
The Pittsburgh SportsNation Game Commentary
For seven out of their last eight quarters, the Pittsburgh Steelers (8-6) actually look like a dangerous team that could be on the rise.
Aaron Rodgers has elevated his play, showing glimpses of the player that will be a 1st Ballot Hall of Famer. The frigid temperatures at Acrisure Stadium on Monday night had no effect at all on him, as he completed 23 of 27 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns in Pittsburgh’s 28-15 victory over Miami.
“I’m a California kid, but I always enjoyed playing in the cold weather,” Rodgers said. “I feel like there can be some advantages to the offense, especially when you’re playing on a field that’s a little beat up or super slick like Green Bay became over the years. So I’ve always enjoyed that.
“I’m gifted with hands that can handle a cold ball, a ball that’s a little slick when the weather gets cold like that. I’ve always been able to throw pretty good.”
Now Rodgers and the Steelers set their sights on the Detroit Lions (8-6), who will be playing for their playoff lives when the two teams battle this Sunday at 4:25 PM, at Ford Field.
The Steelers currently have a one game lead over the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North division with three games left.
The Ravens have the tougher of the two schedules, facing the Patriots at home next Sunday night, then at Green Bay, followed by the season finale at Pittsburgh.
The Steelers, of course, have at Detroit, at Cleveland, then home vs those same Ravens.
When the Steelers have the ball: Aaron Rodgers has passed for 2,594 yards, 22 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He’s been sacked 23 times. Playing through a micro-fracture on his non-throwing wrist.
D.K. Metcalf is the Steelers top receiver, pulling down 55 receptions for 808 yards and six touchdowns. Calvin Austin III has 27 catches for 309 yards and two touchdowns. Roman Wilson, who has been inactive the past two games, has 12 receptions for 166 yards and two scores. Scotty Miller and Ben Skowronek are rarely utilized. Marquez Valdes-Scantling was signed to the practice squad a few weeks ago and caught his first pass for a touchdown against Miami. Adam Thielen has two receptions for 11 yards.
It’s the Pittsburgh tight ends that get the most action when Rodgers drops back to pass. Jonnu Smith leads the way with 32 catches for 202 yards and two touchdowns. Darnell Washington excels at helping in the run game with his blocking, but has become a danger catching the ball, as he has 26 receptions for 313 yards a touchdown. Not many corners want to see that guy running at full speed at them when he has the ball. Pat Freiermuth has been up and down all season, and has 31 receptions for 352 yards and four touchdowns.
Jaylen Warren continues to be a dual threat at running back, rushing for 685 yards and four touchdowns, adding 33 receptions for 292 yards and a touchdown. Kenneth Gainwell comes in to spell Warren, and is 2nd on the team with 451 yards, and has found the end zone four times. Gainwell is 1st on the team with 57 receptions for 332 yards and two touchdowns. Rookie Kaleb Johnson has yet to be utilized by Tomlin, gaining just 69 yards so far. Conner Heyward has been the guy under center when in the “Steel City Shove”, and has one rushing touchdown.
When the Lions have the ball: Jared Goff is having another superb year at quarterback for Detroit, throwing for 3,672 yards, 29 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He has been sacked 28 times.
Amon-Ra St. Brown is the Lions #1 receiver, with 94 receptions for 1,140 yards and 11 touchdowns. Jameson Williams is another weapon that has caught 52 passes for 936 yards and seven touchdowns. Kalif Raymond has 16 catches for 170 yards. Isaac TeSlaa, a rookie out of Arkansas, has just eight receptions for 120 yards, but has been in the end zone four times.
Tight end Sam LaPorta is one of the best in the league, but is on IR. Brock Wright and Ross Dwelly are doing what they can in his absence.
The Lions run game is powered by Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Gibbs has rushed for 1,100 yards and 13 touchdowns, adding 62 receptions for 494 yards and another four touchdowns. Montgomery has 635 yards on the ground, and eight touchdowns.
The Steelers path to victory: Score.
Three weeks ago, I would never have thought this would be possible, but something tells me the Steelers are going to stun the Lions, and put a severe dent in their playoff hopes, and I’ll tell you why… 13 Personnel.
13 Personnel is when the offense employs one wide receiver and three tight ends.
Last week, the LA Rams, who utilize the formation heavily in their offense, carved up the Lions to the tune of 41 points and 519 total yards. They also possessed the ball for 33 minutes and 35 seconds.
Guess what other team specializes in that same game plan?
Yes indeed, it’s your Pittsburgh Steelers, who have as versatile a tight end room as any with Pat Freiermuth, Jonnu Smith, and the enormous Darnell Washington.
Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell ran effectively last week, totaling 135 yards on the ground as an offense.
If the Steelers are smart, that’s exactly what they do against Detroit.
Aaron Rodgers will have to pick up where he left off last week, spreading the ball around to all of his weapons.
Establish the run game, while using its success to utilize play-action, and find D.K. Metcalf and possibly Marquez Valdez-Scantling downfield.
Chew that clock up… the more they have the ball, the less the high-powered Lions do.
The Lions defense is giving up 24.6 points a game, which is 23rd in the NFL, and allowing 231.1 yards a game passing, which ranks 24th.
Let’s not kid ourselves here… this is the Lions, and they light the scoreboard up when they take the field. There’s a reason they are the #1 ranked offense averaging 30.6 points per game. Life is pretty good for Jared Goff who has Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams to throw to, and Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery to hand the ball off to.
The Pittsburgh defense has been playing well lately, but facing the Lions will be a major test that they’ll have to face without T.J. Watt and Nick Herbig. It will be up to Alex Highsmith and Jack Sawyer to elevate their games and pressure Goff when he drops back to pass. Detroit has two of five starters on the offensive line that are questionable to play, and to boot, Goff has been sacked 28 times.
“I’m ready,” said Sawyer. “I’m going day by day trying to get better and get myself ready for anything, just trying to grow as a player, gain knowledge and be ready for whatever opportunity lies in front of me.”
Defensive lineman Derrick Harmon returns after missing several games, and his presence should aid the run defense immensely.
The players on defense aired out their grievances prior to the Baltimore game (damn, did someone on the team read my preview and take that ‘spineless’ comment to heart?), both among themselves and to the coaching staff.
“It was just basically, like, ‘if you got something to say, say it,’ ” Steelers linebacker Patrick Queen said. “Guys just say what they have to say. It wasn’t, like, a ‘Come to Jesus’ moment or, like, everybody just chewing each other out. It was just like, ‘Hey, this is how I see something.’, ‘This is how I see something.’ And then, everybody was like, ‘Hey, how about we all just do this?’
“So it was just like a little bit of everybody just chiming in, saying what they had to say.”
The results speak volumes, as the unit is given up an average of just 18.5 points over their last two games, and held the high powered Miami offense to just 285 total yards last week.
“I think it gives a little bit of confidence because everybody knows they feel the same way.” Queen said. “It’s not just, ‘Hey, I see this, and I’m keeping it in my head,’ and then, ‘I’m seeing the same thing, I’m keeping it in my head,’ and everybody’s seeing the same thing, but nobody’s saying nothing.
“So, it got to the point that you could feel the tension in the room. And everybody who needed to say something, said something. And it’s been flowing right ever since.”
The last two games have been enjoyable, especially the last one vs Miami, where the Steelers were in total control of that game.
Everyone wants to believe in this team. There’s nothing better than confidence. The rush of exhilaration giving you a feeling like you can take on anyone and have a fighting chance.
This is the game where we all find out who these Steelers are.
It’s a very tough assignment, against a team that will be playing at home, with their backs against the wall, and fighting to make the NFC playoffs.
I’m tired of being Charlie Brown, running up for the kick, only to have Lucy pull the ball back and watch you fall on your ass. This is a prove it game, where you either shut your doubters up, or get to hear them say, “I told you so…”
I love the calm, cool confidence that Rodgers is bringing to the offense, and how the defense has upped their play and have begun playing up to their standards.
This game is going to go back and forth, and likely come down to the final three minutes before it’s decided. Protecting the ball will be key, and I think a take-a-way will be a huge factor in the Steelers coming home with a hard fought victory.
Prediction: Steelers 34 Lions 31
