In a game that will be remembered as an instant classic, the Seattle Seahawks pulled off a comeback for the ages on Thursday night, overcoming a 16-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Los Angeles Rams 38-37 in overtime. The victory was secured in the most dramatic fashion possible as Seattle became the first team in NFL history to win a game on a walk-off two-point conversion in the extra period. With this win, the Seahawks move to 12-3, clinching a playoff berth and taking sole possession of first place in the NFC West and the top seed in the conference.
For three quarters, it appeared the Rams would cruise to victory behind an MVP-caliber performance from Matthew Stafford. Despite playing without star receiver Davante Adams, Stafford dismantled the Seattle secondary for 457 passing yards and three touchdowns. Puka Nacua was nearly unstoppable, hauling in 12 receptions for 225 yards and two scores, including what looked like a game-sealing 41-yard touchdown catch on the opening possession of overtime. However, the Rams’ inability to capitalize on red zone opportunities earlier in the game—settling for three field goals—left the door just wide enough for a Seattle rally.
The Seahawks’ resurgence began late in the fourth quarter when the offense finally found its rhythm and the special teams unit delivered a spark. Rashid Shaheed ignited the Lumen Field crowd with a 58-yard punt return for a touchdown to trim the lead, followed by a successful two-point conversion to Cooper Kupp. After the Seattle defense forced a much-needed three-and-out, Sam Darnold led a clinical drive capped by a 26-yard touchdown pass to tight end AJ Barner. In one of the most bizarre plays of the season, the game was tied on a two-point conversion where a backward pass from Darnold was recovered in the end zone by Zach Charbonnet, sending the game to overtime at 30-30.
After the Rams struck first in overtime to lead 37-30, Sam Darnold showed immense resilience following a shaky start that included two interceptions. He marched the Seahawks down the field, eventually finding Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a four-yard touchdown to pull within one point. Head coach Mike Macdonald, refusing to settle for a tie that would have complicated the divisional race, opted to go for the win immediately. Darnold took the snap and found a wide-open Eric Saubert in the end zone for the game-winning two points, completing a stunning 24-7 scoring run to close the game.
The fallout from this result is massive for the NFC playoff picture. Seattle now controls its own destiny for a first-round bye, while the Rams fall to 11-4 and face the prospect of a road playoff opener if they cannot reclaim the division in the final two weeks. While Stafford and Nacua put up historic numbers, it was the “no-flinch” mentality of Darnold and the record-breaking 104th catch of the season for Smith-Njigba that defined a night where Seattle proved they are the team to beat in the West.
