Aliquippa Quips Report

WPIAL Championships (21) | PIAA Championships (5)
PIAA 4A Quarterfinals: Aliquippa Quips (9-3) vs Oil City Oilers (10-1)
Venue: Slippery Rock University, 7:00 PM
“Never doubt a Quip,” said Aliquippa head coach Mike Warfield.
Entering the WPIAL Playoffs, the Quips were thought to be dead on arrival.
A few weeks before, they were ambushed 34-20 by Montour at home. Their starting quarterback Marques Council was thought to be lost for the season.
However, in their first playoff game at Trinity, there was Council warming up on the sidelines.
The Quips went on to stun the Hillers 21-14, then took down New Castle 14-0 in the semifinals.
Surely Aliquippa wouldn’t be able to take down top speed McKeesport, who had the country’s top ranked running back in Kemon Spell?
Wrong.
Though Spell had a 68 yard touchdown run to make it 7-0 Tigers, it was all Quips the rest of the way, as Aliquippa won their 21st WPIAL Championship by defeating McKeesport 21-12.
“We knew we were playing with a little bit of house money. When we started the playoffs we told the kids ‘let’s do the impossible,’” said Warfield. “They went out and played like it. They played free and fast. I’m proud of them.”
Now Warfield and the Quips enter the quarterfinals of the PIAA Class 4A playoffs, and will take on Oil City, this Friday night at Slippery Rock University. Kickoff is at 7:00 PM.
Council has passed for 1,201 yards, 12 touchdowns, six interceptions, and rushed for 227 yards.
Josh Lay leads the team with 31 receptions for 520 yards and three touchdowns. Qa’Lil Goode is 2nd on the team with 24 receptions for 439 yards, adding 139 yards rushing and 11 total touchdowns.
J.J. Work has rushed for 1,030 yards and 10 touchdowns. Akiva Woods has 494 yards rushing and five total TD’s.
The Oilers have Cole Findlay at quarterback, who has passed for 1,399 Yards, 15 touchdowns, and two interceptions. He’s rushed for 681 Yards and eight touchdowns.
Steven Heise has rushed for 1,155 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Landon Baker has caught 31 passes for 591 yards and four touchdowns. Mysaun Mills has 19 receptions for 288 yards and three touchdowns.
The winner will face either Susquehanna Township or Twin Valley in the semifinals.
