COLLEGE STATION, TX — On a day that began with total disaster, the No. 3 Texas A&M Aggies (10-0, 7-0 SEC) delivered the greatest comeback in school history, erasing a staggering 27-point deficit to defeat the South Carolina Gamecocks (3-7, 1-7 SEC) in a heart-stopping 31-30 victory at Kyle Field.
The win not only preserves the Aggies’ perfect season and keeps them firmly on track for their first College Football Playoff appearance, but it also snaps one of the most improbable statistical streaks in the sport.
The Half-Time Hole: 30-3
The first half was an unmitigated nightmare for Texas A&M. South Carolina came out with their hair on fire, exploiting Aggie mistakes to build a seemingly insurmountable lead.
- Turnover Calamity: Aggies quarterback Marcel Reed was intercepted twice and lost a fumble that was returned for a touchdown by South Carolina, leading to a shocking 30-3 halftime score.
- Statistical Improbability: Entering Saturday, teams trailing by 27 or more points were 0-286 in Southeastern Conference play since 2004. The Aggies were facing an impossible climb.
Reed’s Dazzling Redemption
Whatever Head Coach Mike Elko said in the locker room must be instantly preserved in the College Football Hall of Fame. The Aggies stormed out of the gates in the third quarter, led by a transformed Marcel Reed.
- A New Quarterback: Reed shed his first-half struggles to deliver an astonishing second half, finishing with a career-high 439 yards and three touchdowns. In the third quarter alone, Reed threw for 203 yards and three scores, piloting an offense that averaged over 14 yards per play in the frame.
- The Comeback Trail: The Aggies scored on four consecutive possessions, turning the game upside down in a blink:
- 30-10: Izaiah Williams caught a 27-yard TD pass, set up by a gutsy 16-yard run by Reed on fourth-and-12.
- 30-17: Reed found Ashton Bethel-Roman for a 39-yard TD.
- 30-24: A 14-yard pass to Nate Boerkircher cut the lead to one score late in the third quarter.
Clutch Defense Seals History
The defense, which was abysmal in the first half, was arguably the most vital piece of the comeback, holding the Gamecocks scoreless on all five of their second-half drives.
- The Lead Change: The Aggies finally took the lead for the first time with 10:47 left in the fourth quarter when EJ Smith punched in a 4-yard run, completing the 28-point unanswered scoring spree to make it 31-30.
- The Final Stand: The Gamecocks mounted a final threat, recovering a fumble on a trick play near the goal line with three minutes remaining. However, the Aggies defense emphatically slammed the door. Defensive linemen Dalton Brooks and Cashius Howell delivered back-to-back sacks on quarterback LaNorris Sellers, pushing the Gamecocks back to a desperate fourth-and-16. Sellers’ final scramble attempt was stopped short of the first-down marker, sealing the single-point victory and the biggest comeback in Texas A&M history.
The monumental victory keeps Texas A&M undefeated and preserves their destiny control as one of the last three unbeatens in the FBS.
