SAN ANTONIO, TX — In a game that delivered playoff intensity and lived up to every ounce of its star-power billing, Stephen Curry turned in a vintage performance to lead the Golden State Warriors to a dramatic 109-108 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night.
The Warriors’ win, their third in four games, gave them a sweep of the two-game mini-series in San Antonio and, more importantly, delivered their first victory in the highly competitive NBA Cup West Group C tournament play.
The 49-Point Masterpiece
Curry was simply unstoppable, pouring in a season-high 49 points in a furious back-and-forth duel with Spurs rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama.
-
Clutch Finale: With the Spurs leading 108-107 and six seconds remaining, Curry was fouled by De’Aaron Fox on a drive. The veteran calmly stepped to the line and sank both free throws to give the Warriors the one-point lead they would hold onto for the final seconds.
- Lights Out Shooting: Curry was incredibly efficient, shooting 16-of-26 from the field and draining 9-of-17 from beyond the arc, showcasing his unparalleled ability to single-handedly carry Golden State’s offense.
Victor Wembanyama, who continues to evolve into a defensive force, ensured the game came down to the final possession.
-
Rookie Force: The Spurs’ center was sensational, leading his team with 26 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks in a high-usage 38 minutes. Wembanyama also scored the final basket for the Spurs with a powerful inside move over Draymond Green, putting them up three with just over a minute left.
- The Defining Sequence: With 33 seconds left, Wembanyama provided one of the biggest plays of the night, blocking Jimmy Butler’s potential game-tying layup on a crucial drive. Unfortunately for the Spurs, Fox’s potential game-winner on the ensuing possession fell short, setting up Curry’s heroics.
The game, played just two nights after the Warriors beat the Spurs 125-120 in the same building, had a palpable playoff atmosphere. The intensity boiled over in the fourth quarter, with Draymond Green and Wembanyama needing to be separated multiple times.
-
Supporting Cast: Jimmy Butler was a vital secondary scorer for Golden State, adding 21 points along with 8 rebounds, while De’Aaron Fox added 24 points and 10 assists for the Spurs.
-
The Final Miss: After Curry put the Warriors ahead, Fox’s final attempt, an 18-foot step-back jumper, hit the rim twice before bouncing out, sealing the one-point defeat for the home team.
The Warriors now improve their overall record to 8-6, while the Spurs drop to 8-4, setting the stage for a tight battle in the Western Conference.
