The Pittsburgh SportsNation Game Commentary
If there’s someone out there that can figure out the Pittsburgh Steelers, please direct them my way.
Honestly, if you came from the future with information regarding this team, I wouldn’t believe you until I saw it with my own eyes.
After losses to the Cincinnati Bengals and Green Bay Packers, games in which the Pittsburgh defense couldn’t get off the field if their very lives depended on it, the Steelers came out and handed the Indianapolis Colts their collective asses in a 27-20 win last Sunday at Acrisure Stadium.
That’s the same Colts who had the league’s best record and an offense that was scoring nearly 34 points a game, and the Steelers defense completely dominated the game, causing six turnovers, and sacking Daniel Jones five times.
At no time in the 2nd half was this game in doubt, as Pittsburgh (5-3) led 27-10 before allowing some garbage time points late.
So that’s what the highest paid defense in the NFL is supposed to look like.
It seems that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin pulled his head out from his backside and decided to simplify his defense, and allow the talent to do the work.
Although the Colts did start off hot, converting 3rd and 4th downs at will, and jumped out to a 7-0 lead, eventually the defense caused a turnover, which led to a Jaylen Warren touchdown that knotted the game up 7-7, and then it was all Pittsburgh from there on.
They held Jonathan Taylor, the league’s leading rusher, to just 45 yards rushing.
Stopping Taylor was priority #1 coming in, and then the Steelers defense just wreaked havoc.
“You know, his first option is to turn and hand the ball to Jonathan Taylor,” Tomlin said. “So that was the first order of business. It all went on from there.”
Linebackers T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, and Payton Wilson played out of their minds. Jaylen Ramsey was incredible as he switched to play free safety almost full-time, and newcomer Kyle Dugger, was given a game-ball for his play in his 1st game as a Steeler.
“I thought we really homed in this week and kept it simple,” said Wilson.
It was beautiful to see a game where the defense didn’t look like they were confused every play to boot.
“We don’t have to trick people,” Wilson said. “So what if they know what coverage we’re in? We just have to out-execute them.”
Now the defense, with a new lease on life, will have to prove the nonbelievers wrong again, as they travel across the country to take on the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium, in a Prime-Time match-up on Sunday Night Football.
“There’s a lot of potential, but potential is a dangerous word,” defensive lineman Cam Heyward said. “You have to be consistent and learn from your mistakes and make things happen. It’s not just going to fall into your lap. You have to do the right things week in and week out to make sure that happens.”
The Chargers (6-3) offense is headed by quarterback Justin Herbert, who has passed for 2,390 yards, 18 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He’s been sacked 28 times. Herbert is also nimble on his feet, rushing for 305 yards and a touchdown.
Keenan Allen leads LA with 50 receptions for 520 yards and four touchdowns. Ladd McConkey is the team leader with 524 yards receiving off of 47 receptions, and finding the end zone three times. Quentin Johnson completes the trio of very talented wide outs, catching 32 passes for 460 yards, and a team leading six touchdowns. Tre Harris has added 13 receptions for 121 yards and a score.
Rookie tight end Oronde Gadsen has 32 catches for 453 yards and two touchdowns.
With Omarion Hampton and Najee Harris both on IR, it’s Kimani Vidal who has assumed the role as lead back, rushing for 309 yards and one TD. He’s also caught nine passes for 40 yards and a touchdown.
The Chargers offensive line is in disarray, losing both starting tackles in Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater.
On the year, the Chargers are ranked 17th, scoring 23.9 points per game.
On offense for the Steelers, Aaron Rodgers has thrown for 1,692 yards, and is 3rd in the league with 17 touchdown passes. He has five interceptions.
D.K. Metcalf is the leading receiver with 29 receptions for 467 yards and five touchdowns. He needs to be involved even more. Calvin Austin III returned after missing a few games and has 19 catches for 223 yards and two TD’s. Roman Wilson continues to be more involved, and now has nine catches for 114 yards and a touchdown. It’s been far past the time to see what Wilson can add to the offense.
The tight ends continue to be a big part of the offense. Pat Freiermuth has 19 receptions for 227 yards and three touchdowns. Jonnu Smith is 3rd on the team with 25 catches for 159 yards and two scores. Darnell Washington has 13 receptions for 127 yards and a touchdown.
Jaylen Warren leads the team with 404 yards rushing and two touchdowns. He’s also caught 21 passes for 193 yards and a score. Kenneth Gainwell has 220 yards and two touchdowns, and is 2nd on the team with 27 catches for 119 yards. Kaleb Johnson has barely been used this year despite being a 3rd round pick.
Though the team failed to add any offensive talent at the trade deadline, Rodgers was pretty upfront about how to use the weapons he does have on game day.
“It’s not tricky at all,” Rodgers said. “Throw it to the open guy. Whoever gets open is the guy who usually gets the opportunities. I throw it to the open guy. We have a lot of different personnel groupings and splits and alignments and motions where we’re trying to get certain guys the ball. Teams are trying to shut down DK. Teams are rolling coverage to him on damn near every play. Even when it looks like single high, they’ll roll a guy to his side. Other guys have to step up and make plays.”
Metcalf, who played while sick last week, was held to just two catches for six yards. In the past, previous receivers who shall not be named, would’ve blown a gasket if that was their stat line in a game. Thankfully, this team is focused on what it takes to win week by week, not padding their stats.
“We’re just trying to win games in whatever shape, form or fashion,” Metcalf said. “We’re just trying to put points on the board. Everyone wants to hold up a trophy at the end of the year. We have to go through these types of processes in order for that goal to be met.”
Though this is by name, an away game, you can count on SteelerNation taking over SoFi Stadium, making this a de facto home game on the West Coast. Add in this being played in Prime Time, where normally the Steelers play their best, you like Pittsburgh’s chances here.
I’m not sure the Chargers will be able to establish the run game in this one, so you can bet LA will try and win this game through the air. With Los Angeles missing both of their starting tackles, that could spell trouble for Herbert, especially with how a change in philosophy witnessed the return of a swarming and destructive Pittsburgh defense last week.
If that version of the defense shows up, it will be a long night for the Chargers offense. In all honesty, Tomlin is an idiot if he reverts back to his previous defensive schemes.
Pittsburgh will try to establish their run game Sunday night, as the Chargers run defense can be had, giving up 109.7 yards per game on the ground, which ranks 17th in the NFL.
It’s also time for Rodgers to start feeding Metcalf around 9-10 throws a game. Let your big dog eat, and find him in space, as he is 8th in the league with 275 yards after the catch.
Someone has to start getting some deep shots besides Metcalf, so it’s up to offensive coordinator Arthur Smith to find a way to get Austin III, Wilson, or even one of his tight ends in Freiermuth or Smith some long throws on the seam.
This team has plenty of weapons, and it’s up to Smith to get creative and utilize them all. I’m pretty sure Rodgers is capable of getting the ball to them.
This is a huge game for Pittsburgh. A win here gets them to 6-3, and then they’ll have a match-up against Cincinnati where they should be beyond motivated to pay the Bengals back for the loss a few weeks ago. A win keeps the rest of the AFC North at bay, and quite possibly, if Baltimore falters at Minnesota, a three game advantage over the entire division.
Two good teams here, so this one will be a tough and physical affair. It will come down to whomever can protect both the ball and their quarterbacks the best.
Pittsburgh really needs to pick up where they left off last week in getting to Herbert. You can’t give that guy time in the pocket when he has guys like Allen, McConkey, Johnson, and Gadsen to throw to. I think they will, and that will be the difference in this one, as the pressure will force a Herbert turnover that will come back to haunt them in this game.
Rodgers gets Metcalf back in the end zone this week, too. Steelers outlast the Chargers Sunday night.
