TORONTO, C.A.—The Los Angeles Dodgers stared down elimination, stared down the weight of a passionate Canadian crowd, and stared down history. They refused to blink.
In an instant classic that pushed the 2025 World Series to the absolute brink, the Dodgers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 in 11 innings on Saturday night at Rogers Centre, completing a stunning comeback from a 3-2 series deficit to capture their second consecutive World Series championship.
The epic, nerve-shredding finale was defined by a miraculous ninth-inning comeback and a decisive extra-inning blow that will be replayed in L.A. for decades.
The Miracle Comeback: Rojas Forces Extras
The Dodgers were down to their final two outs, trailing the Blue Jays 4-3 in the top of the ninth inning. With the World Series trophy waiting for Toronto, veteran shortstop Miguel Rojas stepped to the plate. Rojas, the team’s number nine hitter, crushed a solo home run off Blue Jays closer Jeff Hoffman that instantly tied the game at 4-4, sending the game into extra innings and silencing the sold-out Toronto crowd.
The drama only intensified in the bottom of the ninth, with the Blue Jays loading the bases with only one out. The Dodgers were forced to turn to Game 6 starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto for emergency relief.
- Season-Saving Defense: With the bases loaded, Rojas fielded a sharp grounder and threw home to barely force out the potential winning run, Daulton Varsho, at the plate.
- The final out came on a circus catch by Andy Pages on the warning track while colliding with Kiké Hernández, somehow sending the game to the 10th inning.
Smith’s Decisive Blow and Yamamoto’s Heroics
After a tense, scoreless 10th inning, the Dodgers regained the lead in the 11th on the game’s ultimate swing:
- The Go-Ahead Homer: Catcher Will Smith blasted a solo home run off Shane Bieber in the top of the 11th, giving the Dodgers their first lead of the entire night, 5-4.
With the slim lead secured, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, pitching on just a day of rest after throwing 96 pitches in Game 6, returned to the mound to face the bottom of the Blue Jays’ order. He induced a grounder from Alejandro Kirk, which was quickly converted into a game-ending double play.
The victory confirms the Dodgers as the first team to win back-to-back World Series titles since the New York Yankees did it from 1998-2000. Yamamoto, who threw 2 2/3 scoreless, high-leverage relief innings in Game 7, was a deserving recipient of the World Series MVP award, cementing his legendary status in his second season.
