The University of Pittsburgh has a rich tradition of football that began in 1890. The Pitt Panthers are Nine-Time National Champions and many of the greatest players in the history of the game started their journey at Pitt.
Pitt boasts 99 First Team All-Americans, 25 members in the College Football Hall of Fame, and ten Panthers have been enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, with more to follow in the near future.
NGSC Sports provides you the ultimate Pitt GameDay Preview, where Panther fans turn to learn everything there is to know about Pitt and their upcoming opponent! The Pittsburgh SportsNation Game Commentary
Not to say I told you so, but… I told you so.
In last week’s Pitt vs Boston College Preview, it was written, and suggested, that if Pitt had any chance of turning their season around, a change would be needed at quarterback.
“About the only true move that could breathe new life and expectations into this year and beyond, would be to play freshman Mason Heintschel, who is the future of this program. Let’s see what the kid can do.
There’s rumors out there saying that may very well happen on Saturday, but I’ll believe it when I see it.”
Saturday morning arrived, and it was announced that Eli Holstein was going to be benched, and replaced by… Mason Heintschel.
All Heintschel did was complete 30 of 41 passes for 323 yards and four touchdowns, in Pitt’s 48-7 rout of the Eagles. He also added 28 yards rushing, and had an uncanny ability to keep the play alive to gain yards, or complete a pass.
Boston College may have been 1-3, but they had kept their games close, losing by a total of 16 points in those three losses.
Pitt wide receiver Kenny Johnson had to be ecstatic about the change. Coming into the game, he had just 11 receptions on the season.
Johnson ripped apart the Eagle’s secondary for nine receptions for 115 yards and a touchdown.
Getting Johnson involved in the offense gives opposing defenses a nightmare in picking who to try and stop.
Poppi Williams has been great all season, leading the Panthers with 320 yards receiving off of 18 receptions. He’s caught a team leading four touchdowns as well. Blue Hicks is 3rd on the team with 11 receptions for 197 yards and three touchdowns. He had a long touchdown pass called back thanks to a penalty vs the Eagles.
Pitt has four tight ends in Jake Overman, Justin Holmes, Malachi Thomas, and Josh Altsman that have all made big contributions to the Pitt offense.
Pitt’s top running back in Desmond Reid hasn’t played since the West Virginia game. He is still 2nd on the team with 142 yards rushing, and had six receptions for 71 yards. Reid was also averaging 21 yards a punt return, and took one 88 yards to the house against Duquesne.
Juelz Goff has played well in Reid’s absence, rushing for 175 yards and three touchdowns. Ja’Kyrian Turner has elevated his game of late, and is now 3rd on the team with 138 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Heintschel will now get an opportunity to showcase his and his team’s talents against the #25 team in the country, the Florida State Seminoles (3-2), who have dropped two straight to Virginia and #2 Miami.
Ranked as high as #8 before those losses, the Seminoles are headed by quarterback Tommy Castellanos, who has thrown for 1,120 yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions. He’s been sacked four times, but is 2nd on the team with 274 yards rushing and four touchdowns.
Castellanos’ top target is receiver Duce Robinson, who has 23 catches for 433 yards and three touchdowns. He is the only FSU wide receiver with double digit catches.
Micahi Danzy has nine catches for 197 yards, but has added 176 yards rushing and three touchdowns to his 2025 resume. Lawayne McCoy has seven receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown. Squirrel White has four catches for 52 yards.
Tight end Randy Pittman, Jr. is 2nd on the team with 11 receptions for 73 yards and two touchdowns.
Lead back Gavin Sawchuk has rushed for 281 yards and six touchdowns. Ousmane Kromah has 197 yards on the ground, with five receptions for 96 yards and a score. Samuel Singleton, Jr. has contributed 167 yards rushing and three TD’s, while Jaylin Lucas has rushed for 101 yards, four catches, and 73 yards.
The Seminoles are averaging 295.4 yards a game rushing, and 560.8 total yards a game.
“They’ve been tested,” Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi said. “They’ve played some good football. That’s a really, really, really good football team, and we’re going to have to play our best to go down there and get a win on Saturday, that’s for sure. They’re really good, talented everywhere and they’ve got great coaches. We’ll have to go down and play.”
It should be noted that FSU had 404 yards against Miami, with the majority of those yards coming in the 4th quarter, when they scored 19 points after trailing 28-3 with 3:53 left in the 3rd quarter.
It’s hard to envision Florida State even dreaming of approaching that average rushing total, considering Pitt’s defense is giving up just 66.4 yards per game on the ground.
I’d expect the Panthers to prioritize stopping FSU’s run game, and limiting their top receiver in Robinson in making any splash plays.
The front seven will have to keep an eye out on Castellanos, who seems more dangerous with his legs than his arm.
Pitt fans may remember him as he played for Boston College the previous two years before transferring to FSU this season. In 2023, a 24-16 Pitt win over BC, he threw for just 171 yards, one touchdown, and two picks.
“He’s fast,” said Panthers safety coach Cory Sanders. “That is a quick guy. We faced him back in 2023. He was a talented kid back then, and he’s a talented kid still. He’s got some good army talent, he can put the ball out there and he’s got some big targets. … The biggest thing I think he presents is the ability to extend plays.”
Good pressure up front could lead to a few timely turnovers that could put the Panthers offense in business.
This game will come down to the better quarterback.
Heintschel rewarded Narduzzi for believing in him enough to make the change four games into the season.
It had to be done, and previously when Narduzzi finally relented to a talented freshman QB, it eventually led to an ACC Championship.
“Last time we went with a starting freshman quarterback was the last game of the season when we beat No. 2 Miami, and it was Kenny Pickett,” Narduzzi said. “We think he has that kind of ability. One game doesn’t define you. He’s got a lot of work to do. But it’s stacking those wins and stacking the execution.”
Heintschel was zipping passes to his receivers in stride, and he didn’t do what cost his predecessor his job…
“The biggest thing is we didn’t turn the ball over,” Narduzzi said. “When you don’t turn the ball over, you’ve got a chance to win football games.”
Heintschel, humble as he is, gave all the credit to his teammates.
“I think it’s a testament to the offense and this team,” Heintschel said. “We have some great players around me, and it makes my job a heck of a lot easier, just being able to have faith and trust that they’re going to help me out.”
What a difference a week makes.
A week ago it appeared this team was dead in the water.
By all means, this team could be 5-0 and ranked. They blew double digit leads to both WVU and Louisville in the 2nd half. Turnovers were a big reason they lost those games.
Now, armed with a quarterback that instills confidence to the entire team, Pitt can now prove they can play against anybody, at anytime, at any place.
When you play great defense, especially against the run, combined with the ability to get to the opposing quarterback and limit big plays, you are going to win a lot of games. Add in a potent offense with plenty of weapons and keeping the ball secure, you have a team that is a nightmare to play against.
I like the defense to play some inspired ball, and continue what Miami exposed and was able to do until they allowed the Seminoles back in the game.
Freshman or not, I’m all in on Heintschel, who now gets to showcase his skills in a very tough road environment, but the better he plays, the quieter that crowd will get in Tallahassee.
I get that the Panthers will be missing some key guys on both sides of the line, but their depth showed up last week, and it was next man up.
Panthers take care of business in a hard fought game, as the run game behind Reid (especially if he plays), Goff, and Turner give the offense a balanced look, and Heintschel proving last week was no fluke with another strong showing.

QUARTERBACKS
Starter: Mason Heintschel | #6 | True Freshman
Heintschel was given the keys to the car and he took off like Mario Andretti. The offense, and the team overall, looked completely different. Gifted with a cannon of an arm, and enough quickness to get out of the pocket and gain yards when needed.
Passing Yards: 359 | TD Passes: 4 | INT’s: 0 | Sacked: 2
Rushing Yards: 28 | Rushing TD’s: 0
Back-up: Eli Holstein | #10 | Redshirt Sophomore
Passing Yards: 1,058 | TD Passes: 11 | INT’s: 5 | Sacked: 9
Rushing Yards: 83 | Rushing TD’s: 1
RUNNING BACKS
Desmond Reid* | #0 | Senior
Reid is a dual threat ball of fury. Currently 2nd on the team with 142 yards rushing, and is a factor catching passes out of the backfield, and returning kicks. Personally, I’d love to see him utilized as a slot receiver in this offense, as his stature has lead to too many injuries.
Rushing Yards: 142 | Rushing TD’s: 1
Receptions: 6 | Receiving Yards: 71 | Receiving TD’s: 0
Juelz Goff | #8 | Redshirt Freshman
Goff, the 5’9, 195 pound freshman, leads the team with 175 yards rushing. He’s been the starter, splitting carries with Ja’Kyrian Turner, while Desmond Reid remains out injured.
Rushing Yards: 175 | Rushing TD’s: 3
Receptions: 7 | Receiving Yards: 63 | Receiving TD’s: 0
Ja’Kyrian Turner | #25 | Freshman
True freshman that was ranked as one of the Top 100 Athletes by On3, 247Sports and ESPN. Looked great rushing for 67 yards and a touchdown against Boston College.
Rushing Yards: 138 | Rushing TD’s: 2
Receptions: 4 | Receiving Yards: 36 | Receiving TD’s: 0
Jalynn Williams | #35 | Senior
Williams is a senior transfer from Western Carolina who may see time if any additional injuries occur at running back. Biggest Pitt back at 5’10, 210 pounds.
Rushing Yards: 10 | Rushing TD’s: 0
Receptions: 1 | Receiving Yards: 9 | Receiving TD’s: 0

WIDE RECEIVERS
Kenny Johnson | #2 | Junior
Johnson looked like the top weapon we all expected with Mason Heintschel at quarterback. All he did was catch nine passes for 115 yards and a touchdown vs BC.
Receptions: 21 | Receiving Yards: 292 | Receiving TD’s: 2
Poppi Williams, Jr. | #5 | Senior
Williams will be opposite of Johnson and been one of Pitt’s best weapon in the passing game. Leads the team with 320 yards receiving and four touchdowns.
Receptions: 18 | Receiving Yards: 320 | Receiving TD’s: 4
Blue Hicks | #3 | Sophomore
Hicks is a transfer from Louisville and is listed as a starter. Made a beautiful one handed touchdown catch in opener, and is 2nd on the team with three TD’s overall.
Receptions: 11 | Receiving Yards: 197 | Receiving TD’s: 3
Deuce Spann | #22 | Redshirt Senior
Spann is a transfer from Florida State, with good size at 6’4, 210 pounds.
