The USF Bulls are hitting the road for their first conference road game of the 2025 season, and the challenge could not be greater. Their opponent: the undefeated North Texas Mean Green.
It has been a strong start for the Bulls, who have won four of their first five games. Their only loss came against the No. 2 Miami Hurricanes. Along the way, USF has turned heads with upset victories over two ranked opponents — the Boise State Broncos and the Florida Gators. Their last two outings have been dominant, featuring blowout wins over South Carolina State and Charlotte. The only close call came against Florida, a thrilling walk-off field goal victory in Gainesville.
North Texas, meanwhile, has been just as impressive. The Mean Green also holds a 5-0 record and, like USF, is 1-0 in conference play after a high-scoring 45–38 win over the Army Black Knights. Their lone close contest came against Western Michigan, a 38–35 overtime victory. Through five games, North Texas has eclipsed 400 yards of total offense in each outing, showing off a balanced attack.
In their most recent game against South Alabama, the Mean Green threw for 234 yards and rushed for 195 in a 14-point win. However, their defense showed some vulnerability, allowing nearly 400 total yards — including 204 on the ground. That could be a concern against a USF team that thrives on its rushing attack.
USF’s ground game was unstoppable in last week’s win over the Charlotte 49ers, as the Bulls piled up 407 rushing yards and over 600 total yards of offense. The only blemish came from four turnovers — two fumbles and two interceptions — mistakes the Bulls will need to clean up on the road. The defense, however, balanced things out by forcing four turnovers of their own.
Despite the early-season hiccups, the Bulls’ defense has been solid outside of the loss to Miami — and that’s a forgivable mark, considering what the Hurricanes’ offense has done to everyone else.
Friday night’s matchup in Denton, Texas, promises to be one of the most exciting conference games of the season. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at DATCU Stadium, where the weather forecast calls for clear skies and temperatures in the 70s.
In the current conference standings, USF sits just behind three teams — including North Texas, Memphis, and Navy — both of whom they’ll face later in the season. A win on Friday would not only hand the Mean Green their first loss but also move the Bulls one step closer to the top of the standings.
With both teams bringing high-powered offenses and balanced attacks, this matchup could come down to who controls the clock and takes care of the football. One thing is certain: when the final whistle blows Friday night, one team’s perfect start will come to an end.
