It has been a great season so far for the Pinellas Park High School JV football team. Their only loss came against the Lakewood Spartans, and there were some undisclosed reasons involved in that game. Either way, under brand-new head coach Josh Estremera, they’ve won every other contest. The only game that wasn’t close was the opener against Gibbs High School. But whether you win by a lot or by just a point, a win is a win. This group represents the future of the varsity program, which has had its share of ups and downs this season. The JV team has two games left—one at home and one on the road. Tomorrow marks the final home game as they host the Hollins High School Royals.
Coming into this matchup, the Royals hold a 2-3 record. Like the Patriots, the Spartans also shut out Hollins earlier this year. The Royals started the season with two losses, bounced back with a two-game winning streak, but fell again last week, getting shut out 10-0 by the Boca Ciega Pirates. They have one home and one road game left, with this being their final road contest before finishing against the St. Petersburg High School Green Devils. Interestingly, both the Royals and the Patriots put up 60 points against Gibbs this season. Hollins will look to snap Pinellas Park’s three-game winning streak.
The Patriots, meanwhile, enter tomorrow’s game riding that three-game streak. Last week, they earned a hard-fought 14-8 win over St. Petersburg. Since coach Estremera took over, the team has looked sharp on both sides of the ball. Estremera also serves as the varsity offensive line coach, giving him a strong connection to both levels of the program. The only real setback came against Lakewood, but the Patriots didn’t let that loss linger—they’ve been perfect since. Now, they’ll aim to improve to 2-1 at home, while remaining undefeated on the road.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Pinellas Park High School. This is a non-district game, but it still carries plenty of weight for both teams. The Patriots currently boast a +25 point differential, thanks to a stingy defense that has allowed very few scores and an offense that capitalizes when given the chance. Pinellas Park also has quality wins over Osceola and Northeast, while Hollins has yet to face St. Petersburg—the same team the Patriots beat last week. JV football is always fun to watch, as it gives a preview of what’s to come for the varsity programs.
The big questions: Can the Patriots extend their winning streak? Or will the Hollins Royals bounce back from their loss to Boca Ciega?
