The University of Pittsburgh has a rich tradition of football that began in 1890. The Pitt Panthers are Nine-Time National Champions and many of the greatest players in the history of the game started their journey at Pitt.
Pitt boasts 99 First Team All-Americans, 25 members in the College Football Hall of Fame, and ten Panthers have been enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, with more to follow in the near future.
NGSC Sports provides you the ultimate Pitt GameDay Preview, where Panther fans turn to learn everything there is to know about Pitt and their upcoming opponent! Mike Drakulich (@PghSportsNation) brings you inside the huddle for both teams, including the Pittsburgh SportsNation Game Commentary, Game Prediction, Broadcast Information, and a complete breakdown of each team.
Heck, you’ll even know the weather at kickoff! The only thing you’re missing is a game uniform!
The Pittsburgh SportsNation Game Commentary
The Backyard Brawl.
The name says it all when the Pitt Panthers (2-0) and West Virginia Mountaineers (1-1) square off against one another.
The vitriol is real when these two teams and fan-bases meet.
“There’s a lot of hatred in the game,” said Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi. “The fans hate each other, and I think it goes way, way back. For whatever reason, there’s lots of scars that people have and haven’t gotten over them yet. For us, as a football game, all the things in the crowd and stands and what happens when you’re driving down on the bus, all that stuff doesn’t really matter.
“It’s what happens on that football field that’s going to matter. The team that stays focused the best on the task at hand is winning the football game. … We’re not going to get all hyped into what fans felt 35 years ago, 40 years ago.”
107 times the two rivals have met, with Pitt leading the series 63-41-3, and coming off an amazing 4th quarter comeback last year vs West Virginia, and winning 38-34.
Normally, the two trade blows like the boys in The Outsiders, but this time around the Mountaineers might be bringing pillows to a fist fight.
It’s bad enough that WVU is coming off a 17-10 loss to Ohio, a game that they were out-gained 429 to 250 in total yards, gave up 24 first downs to their 13, and witnessed quarterback Nicco Marchiol getting sacked four times.
West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez and his team will also take the field this Saturday afternoon at Mountaineer Field without star running back Jaheim White, who leads the team with 133 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
To rub salt in their wounds, 2nd leading receiver in Jaden Bray, who had seven receptions for 95 yards in two games.
Both are lost for the season.
Starting linebacker Reid Carrisco is also questionable to play for the Mountaineers.
Despite WVU being a wounded animal, if Pitt comes into this game with their guard down, it could be them heading home wondering what the hell happened, instead of sticking it to the Mountaineers in front of their home crowd.
It will be Rodriguez’s first game against Pitt since his Mountaineers were stunned by Pitt back in 2007.
WVU had everything going for them… they were #2 in the nation, playing at home, and heavy favorites. All they needed to do was defeat their rivals and they’d be playing for a National Championship
“That’s a lifetime ago,” said Rodriguez. “Is it a sore spot when it’s brought up? Yeah. It was the worst moment of my professional career from a game standpoint. I tried to move past it a long time ago.
“From that regard, it’d be good to get a win. It’s not going to ease the pain from that. It will still always be there. That’s a part of life.”
After that game, Rodriguez moved on to accept the job as head coach at Michigan.
As for the Brawl, Pitt and West Virginia would meet just four more times before both the Panthers and WVU announced their departures from the Big East, with Pitt joining the ACC, and WVU the Big 12.
2012 was the first time in 68 years that the game was not played.
After a ten year hiatus, a four game series was set up from 2022 through 2025. Pitt won in 2022 and 2024.
Now, in 2025, the Panthers would like nothing more than to go 3-1 during this period, before the series once again goes dark for three years until 2029.
Hopefully, starting in 2029, these two will always see one another on the schedule.
“We’d like to see the game played,” said Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi. “It’s going to pick up in 2029, so it’s going to be awhile (until) we play them again. There’s nothing I can do about it. I’d like this game to be played. I’d like to play Penn State. I’d like to play any rivalry game. I think just having that on our schedule is a lot of fun as a coach and players. It’s great for the fans.”
Narduzzi poured a little gasoline on the rivalry fire when he surmised WVU could’ve found a way to play his Panthers through 2027, but…
“I don’t want to speak for Allen Greene (Pitt’s AD), but I think our athletic director has reached out to them and they already got it filled up,” Narduzzi said. “Maybe they don’t want to play us, I don’t know. But they filled it up. But they knew that was going to happen. I know if we knew that was going to happen, they would be our first call. Whatever, can’t do anything about it. Just stay in my lane.”
As for the game, Narduzzi and his Panthers won’t be taking the Mountaineers lightly.
“I’d say advantage West Virginia,” Narduzzi said. “We’re feeling good at 2-0, and they had a tough loss. They will be prepared. Rich Rodriguez will get them prepared. They’ll have a great week of practice, and we will get their best game like we always do.
“They will be intense, they’ll be tough, they’ll be physical and play fast. That’s what we expect. Whether they won or lost, I’m expecting the same thing. But I think we’re probably facing an angrier team and an angrier fan base.”
Narduzzi’s defense, will be focused on getting to Marchiol, who has thrown for 402 yards and one touchdown. With Bray out, Cam Vaughn, who leads the team with nine receptions for 169 yards and a touchdown, will have to elevate his game even higher, if WVU’s offense is to keep pace with Pitt’s. Randy Gallagher, a Laurel Highlands grad, will have his chance to shine in Bray’s absence.
Losing White is a crushing blow, and WVU will have to rely on Cyncir Bowers, Clay Ash, Diore Hubbard, or possibly Kannon Katzer, if he is healthy enough to suit up, to provide the Mountaineers with a running game.
Grayson Barnes is the top tight end with four receptions for 39 yards.
The WVU defense has collected three interceptions, and has gotten to the opposing quarterback seven times.
Pitt’s quarterback Eli Holstein is playing well so far, with 519 yards through the air, eight touchdowns and two interceptions. He’s rushed for 77 yards.
Holstein has spread the ball around. Kenny Johnson, Raphael “Poppi” Williams, Cataurus “Blue” Hicks are the starters, combining for 17 catches for 305 yards and five touchdowns. Bryce Yates, Deuce Spann, and Zion Fowler-El have also made their contributions.
The tight end room has been superb, even with Jake Overman missing the last game. Malachi Thomas has caught a touchdown, Josh Altsman has four receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown, and Justin Holmes has two catches for 25 yards and a score.
Desmond Reid continues to dazzle as a dual threat lead back, as well as being electrifying as a punt returner.
Juelz Goff has done well spelling Reid.
“Coach has the speakers blaring with crowd noise, different chants that West Virginia does and then ‘Country Roads’ played about 15 times today during practice,” said Holstein on playing in Morgantown. “We’re going to be prepared for it. We’re going to do what we need to do to go out there and win the game.”
Holstein knows he and his teammates will hear just about every insult imaginable when they take the field.
“It’s a hectic environment,” he said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun. There’s going to be little kids flipping me off, I’m going to get batteries and beer thrown at me on the sidelines, all types of stuff like that. But really excited and looking forward to feeding off that energy, feeding off the hate and the pure venom and poison from them. Really looking forward to it. Can’t wait to do it.”
I get it, it’s a rivalry game. Toss the records out. It’s The Brawl.
That said, Pitt is the better team… Period.
The Mountaineers managed just ten points against Ohio. I’ll give the Bobcats their props, but their defense isn’t comparable to Pitt’s.
On offense, Holstein has to be sharp, and protect the ball. No costly turnovers that give WVU life or prime field position. The offensive line has to step up and provide Holstein protection, and Reid lanes to run the ball.
Play smart, be balanced and convert in the red zone. If Pitt can put some points up early, that rabid crowd will turn on their team faster than Usain Bolt in a 40-yard dash.
The Pitt front seven has to be aggressive, swarm Marchiol and disrupt Rodriguez’s spread offense. It’s time to see some splash plays, as the defense has created just one turnover in two games.
Shut down whomever is running the ball for WVU, and the secondary has to limit Vaughn making plays down field.
Pitt’s secondary, by the way, will be missing corners Rashad Battle and Tamon Lynum. In come freshman Shawn Lee, Jr. and sophomore Shadarian Harrison, who both stepped in admirably last week vs CMU.
“I mean, you can talk 1s and 2s, but the majority of that game we played with our … backup corners,” Narduzzi said. “I thought both of them did an outstanding job, not only in the pass game, but in the run game, as well. … I was happy. I told you since August that Shawn Lee is a football player, and we’ve talked about Drip (Harrison) at spring ball. Those are two really good football players.”
Saturday will be a good test, as this isn’t Duquesne or Central Michigan. This is still a Big 12 team with plenty of talent.
It’s also your rival, and when you have a chance to bury your most hated opponent, you do so in cold blooded fashion, playing with energy, passion, and shutting them and their fans up on their own home field.
This Brawl will have Pitt standing over their knocked out opponent again…
